Unfounded carjacking report leads to arrest on unrelated charge

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The woman whose carjacking claim earlier this week led to an intense manhunt involving hundreds of Midlands officers has been arrested on an unrelated charge of having child pornography.

While investigating her report, Jackie Burks Brown, 42, gave police permission to search her home, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said.

Inside, officers found a videotape showing Brown's husband , 37-year-old Mark Ellis Brown, involved in a sex act with a child while his wife watched, Metts said.

The couple was initally charged with second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. The incident occurred in Richland County, where Sheriff Leon Lott said the Browns now are charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Based on what Brown initially told investigators Wednesday, officers thought Mikal Deen Mahdi, wanted for killing an off-duty Orangeburg police officer, might be in the area.

Investigators have found no evidence supporting Brown's story, Metts said.

Mahdi was arrested in Florida less than 12 hours after the report.
