Boston Pizza Shop Refuses To Remove Pro-Bush Sign

Boston Pizza Shop Refuses To Remove Pro-Bush Sign
Owner Hangs Sign To Protest Democratic Convention

UPDATED: 3:56 PM EDT July 24, 2004

BOSTON -- The owner of a pizza shop across from the FleetCenter -- site of next week's Democratic National Convention -- is furious that the city has asked him to take down a banner he erected supporting President George W. Bush.

Located across the street from the FleetCenter, Halftime Pizza should be looking forward to a major money week during the convention. Instead, the owner said all the hassle surrounding the event is forcing him to close his restaurant.

"I'm closing because of all the security, the hassle. My regular customers are gone for the week. It's just going to be dealing with the DNC, and I'll put my food up against anybody else's, but they have over 30,000 meals in [the hall], and you can't compete against a free lunch," owner Mark Pasquale said.

On Wednesday, Pasquale began advertising his feelings on a 24-foot long banner he hung outside his restaurant. The sign says, "Thanks for nothing DNC," and roots for Bush for president.

Pasquale said that he got a visit Thursday from city officials who wrote him up for lacking a permit for the sign. They told him to remove the sign, but he said there are probably dozens of businesses all over the city that have signs with permits and he thinks he's being singled out because his sign supports Bush.

"I'm not taking it down. It's staying. I'll pay the fine," Pasquale said.

"I think he's definitely within his rights, and I appreciate what he did," customer David Croley said.

Croley and his colleague, Brian Danley, came from several blocks away to combine lunch with a show of support.

"You know, he's being shut down, and his business is being shut down. I'm here to support him. And I will come back here again. Absolutely," Danley said.

Pasquale said that he will be open again the day after the convention.

To fine him goes against his rights. He needs to take that one to the courts.

Lightbulb 1st Amendment

That's shameful behavior; tell Mark Pasquale of Boston to quit whining and take the Bush banner down......and replace it with a 12-pounder loaded with double canister.

Donkey season! No limit !!

All clear on the firing line......shooters, you may commence firing when your donkey targets appear!
