46gr Hollow Core 7.62x54r ammo-Any good?

As seen in my earlier topic I am about to buy a couple Mosin Nagants, and I was curious about some Ammo.
46gr Hollow Core 7.62x54r at AIMsurplus.
Has any one used these? I know they are not real good for long distance but I believe they would be fun to plink at 100 yards though.
Which kind of surplus ammo works best and is the most accurate?
Which grain of bullet also? I know there are all kinds out there.
Thanks

Never used them...I don't buy surplus either...use modern Wolf ammo...don't like corrosive surplus.

I don't mind cleaning. The reason I want surplus is to just blow everything away (in safety that is) thats the main reason I guess. I am just a curious sort.

JUst a tip most surplus is machine gun ammo and is loaded very hot -- you will find that good ammo is accurate and is nicer to shoot. Haven't tried the 46 grain as I prefer shooting 168gr HPBT's in mine

Seems like I read that before, but thanks for the tip.
I still would like to buy some at least to just shoot up some. I love to shoot and if my addiction can get a little cheaper and enjoy a little history at the same time, then it sounds good to me.
I will buy some clean good loads as well though, if nothing to at least see what she can do.
I have heard that the Czech silver tip ammo is match. Is that true? I know it's steel core and VERY dangerous. I have shot Steel jackets and am a little uneasy about the capabilitys they posses. But I have a safe place to shoot, so it's all good.

I wouldn't know about the Czech since I haven't bought Centerfire ammo from a store in 10 odd years now.

never tried the 46 gr, might make a good squirrel/bunny load

corrosive is ok, long as you clean out throughly with windex then Hoppes, asap.

NRAJOE is lazy, one of them shoot, and throw in the closet sorts of guy.

Yeah, I think the 46gr would make a mess out of some Groundhogs around here. And would be a challenge to shoot with such as well.
I am looking forward to some 200+ grain shooting as well.
Gotta love raw knock down power.

46grn? sounds like a "gallery load"
for short range practice under 50 meters
I wonder what the velocity is .

My thoughts exactly Dennis. Gallery or some type of practice load. Sure cant be a hunting load.
Even the .22 tips the scales at 40 grains.

Well I saw these at aimsurplus.com and they are practice rounds.
The velocity is 3200fps and it says they are good out to 150yards.
Thats the reason I was curious about them. Not for the serious hunting or tight group shots. But they sound fun to plink with, and maybe hit a groundhog or to.
Go to www.aimsurplus.com and its under 7.62x54R ammo.

The Czech silver tip is O.K., but I doubt if it would be classified as "match". Like most of the mil surplus ammo, it is steel core. You'll be dealing with those coated mild steel cases, which may or may not be a problem for you on the extraction side. I've fired about 100 rounds of it; no complaints. Clean as corrosive.

The Wolf ammo is great stuff IMHO; both in 148 FMJ and 200 SP.

I would like to give that 46 gr hollow core stuff a try one day, just for fun. If it can make a decent group out to 150 yards or so, it might be useful as a varmint round. Here kitty.....

I didn't think it was match, but that is what I heard. I guess they were wrong.
But I have heard a lot of good things about the wolf ammo. I will end up with some of it probably for a hunting load.
On another site(gunboards.com forum) I saw some of the groups some one had posted in a pic. It wasn't too bad about 2-3" At 100 I guess. Good enough to canoe a groundhog :smash: They look fun enough and hey free shipping. Not a bad price. I might just order them to try out. And hey if they don't group that well, I can just blow through them like 22 shells :uzi: (all in safety of course)

I had a case of 1988 soviet AP that was wonderful
I shoulda bought two I have shot most of it with wonderful results
the Chek is good stuff
Wolff is well I dunno it seems expensive
I would suggest NOT buying a big bunch of a particular type of ammo
try different types first and see what shoots best and what you like.

I have the AIMsurplus hollow core and it does just fine. Went to the range last week and shot up about 100 rounds, accurate and mild recoil at 50 yards.

Hi all.
I bought a case of the 46 gr. amo from Aim the other day, It shoot like a dream. I used it in my 91/59 and recoil like a 22, with the usual bucket of flaim and noise. It is very accurate up to l00 yards, I don't see good enough past that with open sights.
I also tried it in my mod. 39 and it is a nail driver with no recoil. It is very dirty and cleaning is a pain as usual. I realy enjoy shooting the stuff, I didn't have any sticky cases in my 39 like I do with the Czech that I usually use.

Thanks Mortdooley and Stan. I think I will have to pick up some when I get my C&R.
Once I recieve it I plan on buying a couple Nagants. The 91/30 and M38 are tops on my list. I am really excited about blasting with these guys.
A most dangerous and powerful plinker to be sure, and I am really looking forward to take it deer hunting. With a heavier grain bullet of course.
But like I said, I would love to try out these 47gr on some groundhogs.
