Grandparents sue over jailhouse baby
Mom won't be released until 2012

KNOXVILLE, Georgia (AP) -- The grandparents of a child conceived while her parents were both in the Crawford County Jail want the county to help them support the baby.

LaTonya Finney and boyfriend, Adrian Howard, were jailed in 2002 to await trial on robbery charges. While they remained behind bars, Finney became pregnant.

They say they had been granted a conjugal visit, but the sheriff says the county has never allowed such contact.

Finney's parents, Ronnie and Patricia Finney, are asking the county to help pay for raising their granddaughter, Adrianna. Because their daughter was impregnated while in jail, they argue, Crawford County Sheriff Kerry Dunaway shares some of the responsibility -- and the cost -- while the tot's parents are both serving prison terms.

"I just think it's a very, very bizarre social conscience these people have that their daughter conceives a child and they think the sheriff is responsible," said county attorney David Mincey Jr.

The sheriff said he wasn't even aware of Finney's pregnancy until Howard filed suit demanding to be released from prison to care for Adrianna. That case is still pending.

The couple said Dunaway granted them a 45-minute conjugal visit in exchange for information, but the sheriff said Howard picked locks to gain access to the women's section of the jail.

Howard said there was no way he could have gotten through locked cell doors. "The sheriff let me through the door himself," he told the Macon Telegraph. "It was his decision ... now he wants to change his story about what really happened."

The elder Finneys say they have an income of only $1,741 in disability and welfare checks each month to raise their two other children and a niece, but are determined to continue raising Adrianna until her mother is released from state prison in 2012.

"I wanted that baby to grow up with some family members ... to know that she was loved," said Ronnie Finney.

I have never understood why we let prisoners have conjugal visits. With the high probability of the woman getting pregnant we have forced a child to grow up fatherless (for a short period) and have forced society to pay for the child since the father is unable to support the kid while incarcerated.

They want the state to pay - make the baby a ward of the state and put her up for adoption. Guaranteed adoption parents would be better then this band of losers.

You've got to be kidding??? Would a sheriff or jailer actually enter a woman's cell and impregnate her? How could that happen? Surely this is the first time ever for sex to occur while a man or woman was incarcerated. :insane: :jaw: :guitar: :guitar:

Well, the sherrif says there has not been any conjugal visits allowed. Hummmmmm.......
then, I am courious how she got pregnant. Could it be satan? Or, more likely, she was already pregnant or, someone else used her for a while. Either way, the state owes her, and the family nothing. But, if she was used, while in jail......well, that's another story. Especially, if she was raped in the course of her use. But, since she's not crying rape, we can assume she was agreeable to the uses she was subjected to. A hot evening or three, at the jail, ain't my idea of a hot date but, differant strokes for differant folks.

Well lets see she claims she got Pregnant in Jail -- if I recall jails are segregated and county jails are not open to any visit except behind glass. Sounds like she got pregnant before she was awarded her stay and its just a tax scam to get another welfare handout.

i dont live too far from a minimum security prison,so minimum that they have at least one or two prisoners a month just walk away because of no fences! but i digress...they have had a few cases of guards getting female inmates prego in the past. looks like they would have procedures in place to eliminate this! i honestly didnt think any jail or prison let the inmates have congical visits anymore?

Wow, sounds like a nice prison you got there Whirlwind. I dont feel like eating the prison meatloaf today, i think ill go into town and get pizza. Im suprised more havent escaped than just 2. Must be something nice at that prison.

yup! they dont even call it a prison anymore! now they call it a "detention center" sheesh. and the term minimum security kinda lulls ya into a false sense of security that only non-violent offenders will be there...wrong! the last one i remember escaping was sent to prison for slicing up his wife! (at least i think it was his wife? maybe girlfriend?) reguardless if your gonna live around here ya dont pick up hitch hikers and ya better be armed.

all they have to do is say "ok we will get the baby the best medical care there is,plus pay the grandmother a nice chunk of cash to raise it till moms out of jail...but after that the mother will pay back the state 50% of every dime!" and i bet they drop the case faster than ole mom could knock over a liquor store!

Actually female inmates getting knocked up by male gaurds has been a major problem in Wisconsin as well. The legislature recently passed a law makeing said sexual contact a felony so yah it does happen.

The taxpayer always pays in the end,no matter what,I am getting so sick of paying for everything in this world,closing fire stations here and opening them in other countries,WHY?????????

Because, we are the sheeple! We eat what they give us and are glad to eat it! About the fire stations, I'm not aware of it but, it would not surprise me at all. After all, we have vets, liveing on the streets while we funnel billons over seas. Tell me that's okay!
