hee hee that was a good one! wonder why the french dont believe in better personal hygene? i had a platoon sgt once who met a chick in germany and married her and she flat out refused to ever shave her legs or her pits! plus she picked him up once wearing a short skirt and panty hose!!!! looked like she had worms stuck to her legs!!!!!
I can vouch for the fact that a hotel manager was angry with me for showering every morning and every night (I was using my own soap, too)!
`
Did the hotel even have soap? My younger sister was in Europe for a couple years working for an international conglomerate. For all the talk about how "romantic" French men are, she could never get over the BO - and this is from a girl who grew up with 8 brothers on a farm that raised hogs. Between their ash tray breath and stinking bodies stayng home with the TV was her MO when traveling to France. She did however have something going with a Czech army officer - need to meet that guy sometime.

I remember seeing on the History Channel, not too long ago, where Keith Carradine was narrating a segment on the old west and, primarily, the lack of amenities back then.
Anyway, he claims historians now suggest the average Ameircan, in the good old wild west....even in large cities in the wild west....only bathed once a month.
That seems a little far fetched but that's what was mentioned.
He said, in fact, the heavy use of perfumes by women accounts for all the antique perfume bottles found around old town ruins.
But, it is equally, if not more, true that certain cultures in Europe (particularly) have what we would refer to as poor hygiene rationale.
I also read once that during ancient Greece, ancient Roman Empire and much of the ancient middle East average citizens would bath about once a year and if caught by the rulers' soldiers or 'police' bathing more often than allowed by the rulers they could be severely punished.
But, during these 'modern' times I wonder what the reason is that many cultures avoid what we would consider normal hygiene practices?

In the Roman era, baths were the "in" thing to do for the elite class as they were catered to by their slaves. Lots of public baths were built. Mostly nude public bathing was practiced. The town of Bathe, England, I believe was named after the large number of public bath's built there.
