| Super Moderator ![]() | For the Grand Opening of Cabela's in Wheeling WV, GunGeek, his father, and I piled into his truck and drove down to visit. It was certainly worth the trip, and I was very impressed with the work they put into the wildlife scenery. There was a display of whitetail deer of many kinds, along with information about hunting, population, and how to score. There was a northern display with bears of all kinds, elk, caribou, sheep, wolf, lynx, and more. There was a western display with prairie dogs and pronghorn. There was a water display with a moose, otter, beavers, and real live fish. There was an aquarium with all kinds of small and enormous fish. And then there was the African Safari, with Lions, Zebras, Antelope, Cape Buffalo, and an Elephant. I made sure to sample some of the game meat, of which I'd thought there'd be more variety, but alas the wildest thing I ate was an Elk Deli sandwich. I thought they'd have roasts and stews and buffets with everything from moose to bear. But the Elk was good. I was VERY impressed with their ammo selection. They had everything factory loaded, including Buffalo Bore big bore levergun rounds, ammo by Hornady, Weatherby, S&B, Black Hills, and the like... Found 45-70 for something like $14 a box Rem PMC, and 450 Marlin for something like $25. They had all the big revolver rounds, including 475 Linebaugh and 454 Casull, and even a 50 BMG. And as an example of how obscure a round they carry, they even had Alexander Arms 50 Beowulf. Their used guns were decent, noticed a 300 Win Mag Browning BPR (discontinued), but it had no rear site... Wonder if they noticed. There was a BAR in 338 for $600, something I may pick up some day. And they had a Remington model 8 in 35 Rem and a Win 1907 in 351 Winchester Self Loading, something I've noticed lately (I'm on a quest for a 35 cal semi-auto carbine.) Closest they came to military surplus was a Winchester M1 Garand for $1100. New guns were decent too, they had the new Rem 710 in 300 Win Mag with scope for $340. I've been considering one since hearing they were coming out in magnums, and since I had good experience with my former Rem 710 (apart from violently meeting the scope once.) Handguns were a good selection, with revolvers and autos galore and at decent prices, including the might S&W X-Frame hunter and the 45-70 BFR. I was amused and impressed that they made you take a number to be waited on at the gun counter. GunGeek almost bought a Sentry Gun safe with keypad for $350, but decided to wait till he had more money and more preparations for placing it. He picked up an ATV cover, sokme hunting darts for a blowgun, some Hydrashoks, and a Cabela's Dangerous Hunts video game. So what did I buy? A 40 cal boresnake. Hey, I'm broke. I was tempted to buy elk droppings for SRX (chocolate covered malt balls), but they charged too much for too little. If they'd had the best price on a certain canoe I might have bit, but they charged more for blemished models than Dick's charged for standard ones. (See post titled " So the trip to Cabelas was a good one, and hopefully I'll have more money next time I get the chance to go.

Never can get out of there without buying something. Didja go into the special room where they keep "gun collectable's?" You can pay up to $35,000 or so for some of their museum pieces. I just go there and wonder how anyone could ever come up with that kind of cash for a "wall mounter." Then...Cabela's display here only has mule tail deer...and of course around my part of the U.S. we only see white tail deer. Wish they had some of both us to view. Tried to buy a pistol there (across the state line from my home) and found out it wasn't worth the trouble I'd be facing. Finally bought one yesterday at my local gun dealer site...but paid more, of course. Yes, Cabela's is a fun place to go, and I'll keep going there many more times I'm sure. Most prices are about as cheap as you'll find anywhere but a few items are definitely considerably higher. Like always...you've got to know in advance the approximate value's of items you're thinking about buying. Ammunition, fishing equipment, hunting equipment and supplies, boating and canoeing, and cammo clothing and other sports wear are really appealing they way they're displayed. Gotta keep a lock on your wallet for sure. And...next door to my Cabela's is a "Famous Dave's Bar-B-Q" restaurant. I try to go to both whenever possible and get Dave's special rib dinner, along with a large frosty beer. MmmmmmGood! Now that makes the trip totally worthwhile.

Indeed I did go into the museum with the high dollar guns, I particularly likes the SIG Blaser drillings, a 6.5 Swede atop twin 20ga barrels. Beautiful guns. Also saw an ornate single shot rifle with an octagonal barrel and a full length stock, a design reminiscernt of the old Jaeger rifles uses by German troops in the American Revolution.

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | Cabelas is one of my favorite stores to kill time in even if I don't buy anything. That hasn't actually happened yet but I'm hopeful!

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | Hey guys...this morning the guest speaker at my Rotary Club's 7 a.m. weekly breakfast meeting was a public relations rep from Cabela's. He did a great job describing their history, what their business mission is, a lot about their taxidermy system, their 100% return policy for all products, and a whole lot more. He did an excellent job of representing Cabela's. He mentioned about a special Cabela's card that every person walking in that store should get from the service counter. Seems that on ocassion Cabela's gives out free coupons to qualified customers which are worth various amounts. As I recall, NRAJOE posted earlier that he spent the $30 coupon he received from them, plus probably a lot more.
