Let it go?

You mean like the Republicans and conservatives did during the Clinton years? Sure.

I agree there were reasons the Democrats lost the last election. Some good, some bad. I happen to think that Karl Rove-style character assassination played a bigger part than it should have, but oh well...

But a lot of people seem to have mistaken what I consider a pretty normal swing of the political pendulum for some sort of permanent sea change in the country. I think there's a good chance they're going to be sorely disappointed during the next few elections.

If so, Bush's main legacy will be the appointments he's made to the Supreme Court. That's not a bad thing to my mind. One of the functions of the Supreme Court is to act as a counterbalance and a flywheel, to provide some sort of continuity in government. His judges will act as a check on liberal administrations, just as earlier courts have acted as a check on conservative ones.

Think back to just a few years ago. Bill Clinton.. a man who had made a career of supporting restrictions on our rights by twisting and distorting the truth as he thumps his chest to score cheap political points on the backs of law-abiding gun owners -- noted how his aggressive, anti-gun campaign cost his party control of both houses of Congress in the 1994 elections. Who can forget the blaring headline of the Cleveland Plain Dealer following that resounding rejection of the Clinton-Gore gun grabbing agenda: "Clinton Blames Losses on NRA"?

Clinton bashing again? Oh good; things are back to normal around here, and I can relax and enjoy myself again.
