PENSACOLA, Fla. - A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies — one in his arms and another in his left hand — when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

this brings up a good question!...now the guy was wrong, that goes without saying. but here it is illegal to put down your own animals. idunno why? but i had a game warden friend of mine tell me that. and i told him if one of my animals was suffering hed have to just arrest me cause theres no frickin way id let any of my stock or dogs suffer. like i said i would like to know the reasoning behind such a law.

Pay backs a bi-h, the puppy should have aimed lower, yeah whirlwind that applies here also, I dont know why either. On another note, one of my dogs died a few years ago, and the dog was really close to my wife, so I didnt have the heart to take it to the dead animal pit at the dump at buried it in the back yard. My neighbor saw me and asked me what I was doing and really gave me a hard time about it, youll pollute the ground water, its against the county ordinance blah blah blah, in retro spect I should have left a pair of my wifes old shoes on top and just told him "that b---ch will never burn my eggs again" just to see his expression, as wipe

Whirlwind, here in the NY home of the liberal scum it doesn't pertain to stock animlas only "compaion animals" (dogs, cats etc...) are subject to charges being pressed for thier being put down. they must be by law taken to or have a control officer or designated official to be euthenized in a humane manner.
the law makes provisions for such cases as a car/dog or car/cat type incident that it is evendent that the animal will not survive even after given medical attention.
the euthinizing of a companion animal by its owner for such purpose as to dispose of the animal rather than care for it is a class III felony in NY covered under the "buster law" effective june 1st 1999. before this it was concidered a class II misdameaner.
stock animals are covered under a seperate section that does allow for the dispersal at the owner descretion as they are considered part of the farm or lively hood of the afroesaid farm.
if interested all this can be found in the NY state Agriculture and Markets law Article 7
it covers stock animals and thier treatment as well as animal cruelty and care.
( I used to be an Animal Cruelty Investigator) i would have arrested this man as well.

acctually no, Vets will charge you but animal shelters most of the time will not, they may have a donation fee to cover the disposal of the body or if the dog is not in ill health will adopt the dog out. most cases it doesn't cost anything to take a dog to the shelter for readoption and if there is a fee its small. if they deem the dog not readoptable (after a temperment test) they will put it down at no additional cost. most cases they loose money on what the gas cost to incinerate all the bodys.
in 2000 the center i used to take all the animals to disopsed of over 5,000 animals in one year. and you complain about your gas bill, lol

I buried a dead puppy we had had and made a little cross for my two neices because they had never known anthing that had died before
we went out back and visited the dead puppy a few times until they lost interest in it.
The lawn mower chewed up the little Twig cross and that was the end of it.
I did that for the girls and I think it helped them understand that things die in life and puppies and dogs are not as important as people are.
I guess I broke the law too

no, Dennis the law states nothing about the disposal just the dispatch.
i have plenty of pet graves in the back 40. and yes i have had to put a coon dog or two down, and even a horse. just stateing the law as it reads now.
here in NY. the law was not intended to make any animal suffer needlessly it was acctually writen after an incident up state, where a house cat named buster was tired to a tree used for taget practice with a bb gun then douced with gas and lit on fire by two boys right next to a daycare center.
