CHICAGO - Oprah Winfrey celebrated the premiere of her 19th season by surprising each of her 276 audience members with a new car.

"We're calling this our wildest dream season, because this year on the Oprah show, no dream is too wild, no surprise too impossible to pull off," Winfrey said on the show that aired Monday.
Winfrey said the audience members were chosen because their friends or family had written about their need for a new car. One woman's young son said she drove a car that "looks like she got into a gunfight"; another couple had almost 400,000 miles on their two vehicles.
Making sure the audience was kept in suspense, Winfrey opened the show by calling 11 people onto the stage. She gave each of them a car — a Pontiac G6....
Did she pay for the cars and then give them away? I have heard that Pontiac actually donated the cars and she gave them away during her show. If Pontiac was hoping for some advertising out of this they are SOL, Oprah stole the lime light.

Dhermesc...According to the article I read, Pontiac paid for them (publicity is always good for business)...plus the taxes which would be owed and...I'm sure that Oprah capitilized on it to up her TV rating.
She had solicited people to write to her with reasons why they deserved a new car. Then Oprah, or her staff, selected the winners and invited them to her live TV show. First she announced the names of just a few winners...then with a climaxal :jaw: burst of yelling and cheering she announced that everyone in the audience was a winner.
Look at how many times in the last two days the name "Pontiac" has been mentioned. I heard it cost them around $5,000,000.00. For the exposure that they have gotten it was a deal.
...and now other marketing firms are suggesting this action may set a new trend in advertising...so get ready for more companies to try something similiar.
Hey...many companies pay a fortune just to have their products setting in plain sight during a movie scene, or something like that. With Oprah's reputation??? this advertising gimmick has everyone talking about it which is much more effective than having a static object shown in a movie scene.
Heard on the radio this morning that Pontiac did indeed pay for the cars in an advertising gimmic and showroom visits and sales are already climbing.
gotta give it to that Opra, she is a master con artist, her bank account proves it.Only in America. :insane:
