| Nat'l Guard Slam? I read a thread from another board that John Kerry referred to the National Guard as "plastic soldiers." His impression they are not up to the standards of regular military. I hope this isn't true, because of all the guardsmen currently in harm's way. Indy |

| Super Moderator ![]() | I heard he basically said they were cowards -- personally I have friends in the active reserve and I consider him a hero for stepping up and serving the country.

| The National Guard and Reservists have become a very important component of our national defense, especially with the down-sizing of the active military. They have provided 40% of the man-power in Jihadistan, and many of the men and women have been serving on active duty for months longer than their regs call for. Don't sell them short, they are soldiers, sailors and airmen, just as much as the regular active troops. And Kerry is an !!!. He just totally blew off a very big voting block. JFK shoots himself in the foot yet again.

| Senior Member ![]() | I'm beating a dead horse here. However, I went to the gulf the first time active duty with an OA-10A outfit. We did our jobs and did them well. This time I went with our Guard unit. C130E's with 40+ year old aircraft we out flew every other AD and ANG and RES component in the desert. Due to the Federal technician program the Guard & RES have great depth of knowledge and experience. (we have a bunch of old guys) there was a guy from The TN ANG who was a viet-nam vet and still out there with us young bucks tearing it up. As it was put forth to us, " The history books are being written as we speak" Were doing a fine job out there, all branches. The Govt definitely gets it's moneys worth :right:

| Pretty bad considering Kerry himself joined a reserve unit back in 1966 that got activated.

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | I heard via a Hannity caller a couple of days ago that W. tried to join a reserve group that was being activated during Viet Nam. Has anyone else heard this? The caller claimed that he (W) had volunteered to serve in Viet Nam and was passed over or refused. I'm curious if this is just wishful thinking or actual fact? I support Bush 100% but don't want to spread "un-facts". Just for the record, I wish Kerry had a swift boat up his drain hole!

| Toolman, I also heard that today on fox news (Tony Snow I think), it came from bush's wingman. I have no idea if there is anything to it. |

| W attempted to join an activation called "Palace Guard" (exact term?), and was passed over.

| Bush was passed over for activation because he was trained to fly F-102's. At the time it was obsolete and no longer used by the Air Force. I believe his term was nearly up and did not allow time to retrain. |

| Yep, by the time I joined the USAF (delayed enlistment in '75) the F-102's had all been converted to radio-controlled drones for use at Tyndall AFB's missile range. They were running out of the F-100 drones. The regular USAF had been using the F-106 for a number of years. Heck, most of them were '58 to '60 models. I was surprised the Duece was used as long as it was. Back then, the Guard was the military's "Redheaded Stepchild" - not getting the latest equipment. The Marines are still in that boat.
