I understand that CA, and the North East are pro Kerry but I wonder what is it about New Mexico, that makes it strongly Kerry?

You kidding? You ever been to Taos, and other "Art towns"? They grow Liberals there like we grow tomatoes - but our "maters" don't rot on the vine as quick. Sadly, NM has become a New-age Liberal haven, like California.
The good right-thinking folks are sadly out-numbered in the cities.
