| A 6-year-old Prairieville girl is still awaiting word on what permanent damage she may have after being mauled by a pit bull. The dog attack happened so fast her mother, who was just a few feet away, says she could not prevent it. Cara Gordon's mother was visiting her aunt at a Kenner motel when the little girl was attacked by a pit bull. In a split second, the dog took a chunk of flesh out of Cara's forehead. "Cara was no more from here, maybe two feet away when the dog kind of just pounced on her and took a piece of her forehead out," says Tracy Gordon, Cara's mother. It took doctors more than 100 stitches to put the chunk back into Cara's head. Doctors say it will be at least a year before they will know the extent of the nerve damage. Since the attack Cara has not returned to school. "I was upset, I did not want to go back to school. Because I thought people would laugh at me," says Cara. The dog meanwhile awaits a court hearing on September 10th to determine if it will be killed, which is exactly what Cara and her mother want. "I definitely want to see that dog put to sleep," says Tracy. Cara says, "I don't want that dog to hurt anybody else." A special fund has been set up for Cara's medical bills. You can make a donation to the "Cara Gordon Account" at any branch of Hibernia National Bank. http://www.wafb.com/Global/story.asp?S=2253766 |

| I would kill the dog to save the child. I would kill any dog that viciously attacks anyone, especially a child. |

| Why is this even a question? All Animals are not worth one human. even a last of its kind endangered species attacking any human should be stopped even if it means killing the animal. How can any one even concider any other option?. Thats what is so unconcienable (sp) about Peta they have hurt and killed people to protest what they concider "unethical" treatment of animals. We are supreme on this planet and we must look after each other AND animals. if an Animal kills a person then shoot the animal would you walk up to a pride of lions on the serengetti ? with out a gun or in a vehicle? how about go swimming with the 18 foot crockadiles on the upper nile? it would be fool hardy to do that. even stupid. Where has the idea that animals are people too come from? it is the dunbest thing I ever heard

| Yes, I probably would have shot the biatch too, if she was deliberately preventing me from rescueing a kid being mauled by dogs.

| I had to shoot a dog that came after me one time while I was squirrel hunting. Big dog, fortunately I was packing my Mossy 835 with express loads. He did not feel too much. Learned a lesson that I won,t go in the woods without a weapon, even during bow hunting when we are not supposed to carry any other weapon. Keep wondering what would have happened if I hadn't been carrying.

| Yep, I'd blow that dog away. I love dogs, but this animal is obviously vicious and dangerous. I'd also sue the crap outta the stupid owner letting that animal run loose. I hope he/she realizes the pain and terror they put that poor kid through. She may never be able to enjoy a dog again. As for the "Humans over Animals" issue - I draw the line with regards to an animal in it's own habitat. Go wading in a Florida lake, knowing there's the possibility of gators in it, I'll warn ya, but you're own your own, Bucko. Same with swimming with sharks, hiking in Grizzly territory. I'd not kill the critter for doing as nature has programmed it, in it's own habitat. We have to take the responsibility for going into wilderness. It ain't a walk in the park! Same if an idiot climbs into a lion or bear den at a zoo. Tough noogies - he/she should know better. Don't punish the animal for a moron's suicidal behavior. I firmly believe that contenders for the Darwin Award are best left to pursue it as they wish. Only the smart should survive.

| I want to pass on a personal story that affected me. First I want to say I have always had dogs from Beagles, Shepherds, Drathaars and of course a Pit Bull. With that said I was offered a Pit puppy at a time in my life when I had no dog and though I knew about the breed I have always raised my animals with kindness. So the viciousness of the breed was known, but I always wondered how much is breeding and how much is taught. In less than a year I saw signs that this dog was not going to be a dog that I would keep as a pet. The dog was not a social animal and was sneaky in many aspects of it's interaction with me and others. So I decided to put it in the dog run at my business, where I already had a Rottweiler(sp) that ran the perimeter at night as a guard dog. Well my partner pleaded will me not to do that and that he wanted the dog for himself as a family pet. I explained that the dog was not a pet and I would never give it away as such, but he would not have any of that and he wanted the dog. Within a year it bit a kid in Steve's neighborhood and 2yrs later it did it again. Steve had to have the dog put down. He could not afford it because of the lawsuits and his homeowners was going to drop him. The reason for having an animal such as this needs to be weighed heavily. I do believe there is a need for the breed, but it is so specialized that it should be licensed as such with the appropriate insurance. So, would I kill an animal to save a life? You betcha, in a heart beat.

When I was in grade school my father made me shoot the family pet because it was chasing our neighbor's cattle - ever see the end of Old Yeller? That being said I'd shoot my own animal if he ever gave me cause for concern for my children's safety, let alone if he actually did something. Concerning the breed in general - it has its place (guard dog, watch dog) but definately not as the family pet.

| Senior Member | yup dhermesc, ive shot dogs for chasing cattle a few times too,and ive shot them for being overly aggressive, ive shot a few strays that were foaming at the mouth ,ive shot a few strays that wandered up and were so mangey that their muscles were exposed in a few spots, and sadly ive had to shoot a couple of my own family pets to put them out of their misery after being run over. ive shot enough of em to say that shooting one after an attack is a big no brainer. its sad to have to put any dog down.but it makes me mad most of the time because most of the time its not the dogs fault, its the owners. ive raised alot of pits and there are those that are just plain mean, but most of the ones that are mean were more than likely made to be mean at a young age. most of the ones ive raised were great loyal loving dogs, but once and a while ya get one with mental problems and they have to go.

| Whirlwind said it perfect about a dog with mental problems. I also had a pit bull once and he was the friendliest most loving dog you ever saw. I wouldnt trust a pit bull as far as I could throw him. I hate that breed and I owned one. I was lucky and had a good one. I have personally seen what pit bulls can do to a person. Holy crap, they will tear you apart. About 7 or 8 years ago I heard cries for help and went to check it out. It was about 4 houses down the street from where I use to live. There was some stupid lady, probably THE stupidest lady I ever saw, trying to break up a fight between her two pitbulls. She wanted me to come in her yard and hold back one pitbull. Of course I said no. She was a bloody mess but insisted on trying to hold the dogs apart. I yelled at her to let go and get the hell out of there. Again, she refused. I called 911 and the cops and then the animal control people came. She was wearing shorts and had blood gushing from both legs, her arms were hamburger, face was a mess and you know she had enough nerve to yell at me for calling the cops and not trying to break up a fight between two pitbulls???!!!!! She got a heavy fine for un licensed dogs and also a viscious dog law. She came to my house about a week after this happened and very sarcastically said "thank you for screwing things up" I almost wish the dogs would have devoured her. If that happened today, you can bet I am within easy reach of a gun and wouldnt hesitate at shooting an attacking dog. |

| Senior Member | if i didnt have children i would have another pit,but only if i raised it. the breed is dangerous if they are not trained in a loving home. and of course you do have those few pits that do have mental problems.and its because of them that i will never own another one...not with children in my home, and hopefully grandchildren one day so im off the breed for ever. i now own a chinese pug and a lhaso apso the only thing the pug barks at are flies that land on his food bowl and the lhaso only dislikes repairmen lol

| I am a dog person, but I would have no trouble pulling the trigger on one to save a child.

| Well, I am an animal lover (no, I don't date sheep), and am against killing predators in their natural habitat because grossly negligent humans MIGHT be injured, but I would certainly shoot a creature actively attacking a child. That includes 2 legged ones.
