| Super Moderator ![]() | remember this well guys I am sure many of you remember the national attention that TN got with the cops shooting the families dog on the side of the highway here is a recent update on the case The city of Cookeville has settled a civil lawsuit filed against them for the shooting death of a dog by a city police officer. The city will pay the family that owned the dog more than $75,000 for pain and suffering caused by the shooting. A Cookeville police officer shot and killed the dog owned by the Smoak family during a traffic stop on Interstate 40. The family is still suing the Highway Patrol officers who were there when the shooting happened. The family was pulled over and ordered out of the car at gunpoint because police mistook their car for one used earlier in a robbery. The family was returning home to North Carolina. A Cookeville shot the dog after the dog escaped from the car. The shooting was caught on video and gained national attention.

| Senior Member | That account is pure BS. The car was NOT mistaken for one used in a robbery! There was no robbery at all! The station wagon was reported to 911 because Mr. Smoak accidently left his wallet on the roof when he pulled out from a rest stop and his vacation money was blown out on the highway. There was no robbery or any other felony involving a green station wagon, especially one clearly holding a vacationing family and a pet Boxer. There was no justification for terrorizing the family and shooting the dog, especially after the stupid cops were told there was a dog in the car and THEY let it out. Of course, filing false reports after the fact did not help the police department's case, since the police videotape contradicted much of the reports. One of the reports, for example, claimed the dog, described as a large pit bull, was shot once after charging at a police officer (who had a long history of shooting dogs). In reality, the dog was a fairly small boxer mix, and was actually moving away from the officer, when he freaked out and shot it apparently 3 times with a shotgun. The sound is drowned out after the first shot, but you clearly see him pumping the 12 ga. twice after the first shot.
