Am I nuts, or does this make good sense?

I'm going to get a slug barrel for the 870 Wingmaster.

I have a bid on a Remington Barrel on E-bay

Gyrene turned me onto Numrich, nothing right now but I'm checking back.

I can get a Remington of course.

The sleeper is the Mossberg. Yes, they make 870 slug barrels

By comparison price

The Remington:
Wingmaster Fully Rifled Deer Barrel w/ Rifle Sights 12 20" RS Fully Rifled $256

The Mossy:
24" RIFLE SIGHTS
FULLY RIFLED BORE
BLUE
$168

A pretty good price difference. I have no qualms with Mossberg barrels in general. Think I read where they have a very good quality control and Mfg system with them.

I'm not too hung up on keeping the 870 "pure" I'll never sell the gun. The additional slug barrel may go but the gun stays.

Is this something that may make good sense to try? Looking for opinions.

Also,
Iv'e read things on making 870's shoot more accurately with slug barrels by permanently affixing the barrel to the action. I'm not looking for a permanent mod. However we have these little foam self adhesive pressure pads we use on electrostatic paint gun turbines. I wonder if sticking one or two of them on the barrel would sufficently "tighten" it up?

Buy the Mossberg. For $168 they should be able to make a top-quality barrel, since they can manufacture an entire shotgun (Maverick) for the same cost.

I can't understand why replacement barrels cost as much as they do. They don't seem all that complicated to make.

As far as attaching the slug barrel permanently, I can't understand it. Slugs aren't so accurate that this would be necessary, in my opinion. Sound like a "gimmick" solution. Try the foam pads if you like, and see if it helps.

Thanks,
Went to order the Mossberg today. I have 9 days untill the 2nd part of the season. Mossberg dosen't accept the debit card as a credit card. That & I need to shoot a bunch of slugs out of it of different kinds to find the right load and sight in.

I'll still probably get the barrel, but send a money order and get it set up for next season. I'll finish out the year with the TC Hawken.

I don't know why replacement barrels are so costly. It's what the market bares I soppose. I'm looking forward to trying the mossberg barrel on the 870.

More than likely rifle sights. I'm not a huge fan of scopes & the distances are fairly short where I hunt (for now anyway)

Hastings are good barrels. I'm trying to work within the parameters of the $160 I'll get back for the JC Higgins bolt turn in.
