I posted a while back on a Savage single shot 20ga that a friend's mother had, which had belonged to her husband, now deceased. She had no desire to keep it, since she basically wasn't prepared to use it and didn't want the liability of having it around. I had declined it before but now had a use for it (see upcoming post on my special project ). Fine little shotgun. And the funny thing is I fired about 50rds out of it, but none of them were shotgun rounds. That will be explained later...

The only "free" gun I every recieved was when I had to hire an outfit to rooter several dump basins at work. In one of them they found a Raven .25acp pistol. After cleaning it up the nickel plating was still intact and the bore still servicable. Probabely a murder weapon?

Mad Dog, you don't know our BRG! It's gonna be something much more involved and interesting than a simple barrel switch between similarly based guns! Do a search on "35 conversions" or similar and you should find some threads giving his ideas. I'm glad he's getting his ideas and testing into metal now!
I've gotten 2 free guns. One was a old Winchester Model 55 (not the greatest) and an Ithaca Model 37. Both guns are pretty old, the Winchester shows it but he Ithaca keeps on looks !!!! good too.
Tried to blow one up with a 20 ga ahead of the 12 ga. No go. Then plugged the barrel with rags and still no go. The action is just as smooth as at the start but the stock blew off somewhere along the way. Never told my Hunter Safty class about it though. Still wanted to warn them about such goings on.
P.S Just checked the number and 583.1 is not one of the listed numbers.
Jerry, my 20 gauge JC Higgins 583.3 bolt-action has a pretty beefy action. Very stout locking lug at base of the bolt handle, and a second smaller safety lug opposite the bolthandle. Seems a very strong lockup.
What made the 12 gauge need a recall?
Mine has a very light trigger and a funky safety - unsafe for field use, but okay for range use with proper care taken.
I paid $50 for it - private sale from a favorite ammo vendor's father. I was intrigued with the bolt-action/tube magazine combo - I'd never seen one before. Nice wood, but a horrid black-painted metal finish.
It started off my small collection of bolt shotguns.
"The shotguns are being voluntary recalled due to a potential problem with
the bolt latch assembly, which could cause the assembly to fail allowing it to
dislodge and strike the operator in the face. "
I'm not 100% sure Big Dog, but a guy told me the lesser amount of metal in the larger 12 guage version was part of the problem.
