Thumbs up

Well, that's one of the few bennies of being a State worker - we get the bucks the court pays us, and we can use a special leave code for court/jury duty, so we get regular pay as if taking a regular leave day - "double-dipping" I guess. Cool.
I'd still like to sit in on a case, to see what it's like.

Uhahahaha! Now we know why their budget was so short. Gov. Jeb Bush must have a few other ways to reward his employees.

As a former employee of a government agency, a public school educator, I never got the opportunity to find out about double dipping since I wasn't summoned to appear as a juror. For sure I can't double dip by getting both S.S. and my retirement income. S.S. is nearly wiped out for me.

I never have to go to Jury Duty.

Every year I get a jury summons, got one last month. I write back saying that I am self employed and that I am the sole provider for my family and that it would be an undue financial burden on me. They always send a letter back saying that I am excused for another year and then the next year we go through the same thing. While I would like to do my civic duty and serve on a jury I cannot afford to be away from work for a long trial (like two weeks). I have included in my letters that if I could be summoned to a short two or three day trial that I would be happy to serve.

AllenT...Like was said earlier in this thread, it seems that those selected tend to be those whom the attorney's "think" can be influenced their way. As a businessman and owner, you're not likely to fit the profile that fits their "wants." And...no doubt, having to let the business flounder while you're away could be an undue hardship on you. I'm glad the courts gave you that consideration.

Here in Southern Maryland, being an NRA member didn't get me off the jury any of the three times I served. Neither did working at the Courthouse where I served. Very interesting experiance to say the least. You learn a little about your fellow humans ideals.

Apollyon67...tell us more about what you meant. And about those three cases...if I could be so bold to ask.

If you're not interesting in expanding I apologize for asking.

No worries Oxford. I never mind answering questions as best I can. The one case was of a gentleman that copier generated a payroll check. When they passed the check to the jurers you could tell it was fake. I mean it was not even good enough to fol a ten year old. You could even see where he had whited out over the name to make the copy. What really hurt his case was his girlfriend was sitting in the courtroom giggling at the prosecuting attorney. He was a rather large African American man that had taken to staring down the jurers. Well, He tried anyway. Made the forewoman a little peeved. The second one was a simple drug dealer we sent to prison for a nice long time. The third was the interesting one. Seems a Car Dealership sold a used truck to a woman as a new one. The sad thing is the same salesman sold it to both the first and second owners, then said he didn't remember that. The irony of the whole thing was the evidence that sank the dealer was from Diamler-Chrysler Weird case. The first owner was a friend of the salesman, after he brought the truck back for severe transmission problems. (read Died on the Capitol Beltway) and was sold another truck, he died. Meanwhile The dealer resold the truck that had bad brakes. All she wanted was to have her brakes fixed, When they didn't do it the first three tries. She asked for a new one under the "Lemon Law". She got a very good deal from the jury that day. We deliberated for about two hours. By the way. I was the only White male on the jury of six. I hope this reply isn't too long. If anyone wants more info, feel free to email me. Put jury in the subject line.

Sounds like interesting cases, Apollyon67 :right: You did your part for the sake of law and order, and bringing them to a speedy fair trial. That 's all you can do.

It may be years before I get the opportunity again to be involved in the jury selection process..or on a jury...but have you got any suggestions on getting selected? I know...be honest...but beyond that?

To be honest, I pretty much just acted indifferent really. I served each time I was selected to show up for the prosess. Now that you mention that I can ask some of the Prosecuters at work what they look for. I did notice that they tried to get as divers a group as possible for some reason. Good luck.
