Loading them up whenever people looked at threads was sucking bandwidth. They are now shown under a user's profile. They're there for those who want to look, but you don't have to wait for everyone's to load a zillion times each time you view each thread.

I got it from a good source, that the avatars were pulled because some people had derogatory avatars. Some felt that these derogatory images were not in keeping with the family atmosphere that the owners want.
