Talking I'm back in the family! New 1100!

Welp, after selling my first Remington a few years back to pay towards an M1 Garand, I'm back in the Remington camp again. Stopped by Gander Mountain last week with GunGeek and saw it on the shelf... Rem 1100 Magnum with wood stock and 30" barrel. Though I'd prefer an unengraved receiver, I decided not to hold that fact against it. The 30" barrel was exactly what I wanted for a custom project, the model was right, and the price was unpassable. $250. Actually, I did pass it that day because I was way toolow on funds to consider it. Thankfully I got a check that made it possible to jump on this while waiting for my AR-15 to sell. So before going back to school this morning, I drove by and picked it up (course I called first to see if it was still there.) Comes with a 90 day warranty and the option to extend that for a year for $20. Even better, they had O-rings on the shelf, which I hear is the primary item to periodically replace.

With my M590 holding the fort at home, this will be a great gun for the shotgun plinking that I love to do. And in time, it will be the basis for a beautiful work of art - the Auto-Musket, which well combine the best of modern and classic design into a large bore, large capacity, long barreled, and elegant firearm.

While the doctored pic doesn't do it justice, this is my basic long term project goal.

Imagine a ten round semi-auto shotgun with a full stock and the brass furniture trimming styled like a Brown Bess.

Naw, that would only be if I did it to an M1. This won't even involve changing the existing parts, just extending the mag tube and slipping it into a one piece stock. It would be 95% reversible , but after making such an elegant piece, reversing it wouldn't even cross my mind.

No no no, it's not new by far. It's new to me. I guess the post title was a misnomer, sorry for that. No, this shotgun is well used but in good shape. The forend cap is a little reddish and while the finish of the stock is excellent, it shows its marks. Still, I think I got a smokin good deal. I wanted the longest barrel possible for my project, and it doesn't get much better than this. I wanted a decently reliable action and for a non-Beretta/Benelli/HK shotgun (ie affordable) in standard tube fed config you can't beat the 1100. I wanted to be able to use 2.75" shells and slugs, which would be harder to cycle reliably in one of the newer 3.5" magnum shotguns out there. Now I just have to make sure the choke is appropriate for foster slugs and I'll be set!
Gonna order me a magazine tube extension at the next opportunity and crank the capacity up to ten rounds. While I love box mag fed shotguns like the Saiga, nothing beats the fast loading of the tube mag, and it's also much better for my big auto-musket project.

Papa G and NRAJOE would be proud... this aquisition is in part possible due to the upcoming sacrifice of my AR-15.

The stock's about 75% finished. The shotgun fits inside it, I just need to shape the gripa little better, inlet the front section for a tube extension, and smooth out the front half of the thing.

It indeed does look a bit like the computer generated concept.

Very cool! I'm wondering why you've extended the stock so far down the barrel? Does that serve to reinforce things, or is it primarily to achieve a specific look?

The full length is mainly for looks, to resemble a traditional musket. It also conceals the magazine extension. Instead of a protruding mag, you have a long stock and the mag-less look while still having 10rd capacity.

It isn't any different now than in the pics, but hopefully I'll get it in better working order. I may end up making a different stock, as the sassafrass its made out of isn't the greatest. Good for cheap prototyping though.
