Deputy Allegedly Arrived Drunk At Homicide Investigation

POSTED: 5:49 pm EDT April 7, 2005

DELEON SPRINGS, Fla. -- Channel 9 has learned that a Volusia County deputy is under investigation for being drunk when he arrived at a homicide investigation in DeLeon Springs.

Last week, there was a deadly accident in DeLeon Springs. Some say the watch commander showed up, but was in no condition to help. In fact, he needed help himself.

It was a chaotic accident scene. A 46-year-old DeBary woman burned to death in a car after she ran off the road. But the sheriff's office is now investigating allegations the assistant district commander showed up to the scene under the influence.

According to a notice from the sheriff's department, Lt. Steve Helmer is now under investigation from internal affairs. The letter states three possible violations:
engaging in activities that could discredit the sheriff's department; use of alcohol while on duty; and reporting for duty while intoxicated.

According to witnesses who don't want to be identified, Helmer staggered and was visibly drunk when he got out of his car. Witnesses also say Helmer was so intoxicated, he had to be driven home by another deputy.

The sheriff's office will not comment further on the investigation since it is ongoing. Representatives from other agencies who witnessed the event are also barred from comment.

The sheriff's office did say that Helmer has not been suspended. He is still working in the DeLand-DeLeon Springs area.

Helmer has been with the department from 17 years. He has been investigated twice and exonerated. He's been verbally disciplined once for a non-alcohol related issue.
