Auburn Man Ordered To Pay Support For Child That's Not His

Auburn Man Ordered To Pay Support For Child That's Not His

POSTED: 6:42 am EDT April 24, 2005
UPDATED: 6:44 am EDT April 24, 2005

AUBURN, Maine -- Maine officials are coming after a 35-year-old man who they said owes thousands in back child support for a child that is not his.

They said Geoffrey Fisher owes about $11,000 in child support to cover the time from the child's birth until paternity tests proved that Fisher was not the father.

They say Fisher failed to file a court motion three years ago that would have relieved him or any financial responsibilities for the child.

But Fisher said he's flabbergasted that the state sent him a letter seeking payment even though DNA tests have proven he isn't the father.

His attorney, James Howaniec, said he plans to file a motion to relieve Fisher of parental responsibilities. But he said Fisher could still be held responsible for past child support.

Actually, its the law. In some states if you are listed as the father and don't protest it then you are on the hook. some even have SOL that become permanent after a certain time. And if you are married to the mother of the child when she gives birth then you are automatically listed as the father.

This came up on Jerry Springer or Montell one time. Its kind of underhanded but its a way to keep the state from paying for your baby.

This is true. I have a friend who was going out with a girl - everything was going on well and he thought she was a great girl but she kept rushing him to marry her after only 2 months until the secret came out that she was pregnant (not with his child). He really liked her & he's a decent guy - if she had only told the truth, the guy would've even supported both of them.

if the guy cared enough about the child that he wanted to support it and make sure it was raised right that would be fine. but this is BS.

I bet 20 years ago you didn't have all these problems with paternity. That's what ya get in today's society of casual sex and Baby's Daddys.

It's common, in California you're still on the hook even AFTER your prove your not the father. Once you start paying child support you're on the hook for the next 18-21 years.

now you can see the pain i'm haveing to deal with here in NY its even worse here. child support is run by Nazzis here. they make the SS look like boy scouts. you would not even believe the power they have. even more than the IRS.

Yes, this is ALL TRUE,... However he did have the right it said 3 years ago to sign his parental rights away, which would have released him from any financial responsibilities for the child, and since he didnot do this he is responsible under the law. There are many men out there who are married and do bring children into this world and sign them away so they don't have to pay...

No sorry to say I am not just quoting> 25 years ago after 4 months of marriage I found I was with child, also found out the man I had married had lied to me about his past and was a fortune hunter. I divorced him and gave him the option to help with the unborn child, go to divorce court and have the Judge grant me child support or sign his rights away and I would assume full finanical responsiblity...he signed his rights away, and I have never seen him again. That was my first and only marriage. The only person this hurt was my daughter growing up without a father, it affected her so much she had to go through counseling and has never understood why her dad didnot want her. SICK....you have NO IDEA.. how painful it was to see my little girl grow up without a father and wanting to have a Dad more than anything. I had the best Dad in the whole world, and she always heard the stories about him growing up. All her life this affected her, so I tried to be a Mother and a Father to her teaching her things a Dad would have taught her, like shooting and hunting. She learned how to shoot and hunt and bow hunt, and held 5 State titles in trap and is a beautiful girl, but she has never got over the fact her own father signed his rights away....someday I keep thinking I will meet a man and give her the father she never had, who deserves two beautiful girls.....Lady Di

Unhappy

Thanks for sharing that story Lady Di. Your perspective on this is well taken. Yes, some men are scumbags and would do anything to avoid responsibility. But there are also women out there who lie. It's unfortunate for the other good person (man or woman) to be faced with such a partner. Sometimes it messes up people a lot. That story I mentioned about my friend - the guy now distrusts all women. Maybe one day he will meet someone who'll change his mind.
