Mark III or II

Ruger Mark III for $250 new.... $300 for the target model---or the 22/45 if you like polymer--can't beat the build quality--the gun will last a lifetime--and the accuracy of certain ones (built on Wednesday?) is pretty much as good as you get with a gun that fires on an open breech--

The .22 plinker (SA wheel gun) is a hoot--and darn accurate too.

EDIT: that's why I changed the grips...the Mark II has more available grips out there like the Volthane and Hogue wrap arounds.

If I only have $200 in my budget for a .22 pistol, is there even one worth getting, I live in snake country here in AZ and just want something that is reliable that I can carry. I dont do too much target shooting other than just plinking. Also I am fine with a wheel or semi-auto. If I do go used what should I look for? Thanks guys.

If you want a snake gun in .22 you are probably better off with a revolver loaded with shot shells. Personally, I’d go with a .38/.357 loaded with shot shells. That’s what I used to carry down in TX when we’d go hiking or camping. I had friends that would carry, and swear by, .45/.410 derringers loaded with .410 shot shells. Certainly, you should be able to find any of the above mentioned firearms for $200 or less.

If you can find a good used Ruger 22/45, you will do well. I bought one in almost mint condition, used for $185. Accurate, reliable, good price.

I originally bought it so that the wife could have one to shoot of her own. She took over my Buckmark, loved shooting it, but had trouble chambering with the lack of slide grips. She dropped the idea of shooting for a while, so I got the occasional use out of it. Yesterday, I took her to the range again and she decided that she loved the Ruger and could easily rack that slide. Go figure.

I have an old H&R model 929 9-shot .22 revolver that I carry with me when I go fishing. I bought it at an auction years ago for under $100 and It's an ungainly looking thing, but it's a good shooter.

I have a Walther P22 and I like it. For the price, it is a good little gun and fun to shoot. I haven't had any feed/cycle/eject problems with standard target .22 ammo (Thunderbolt or Remington). I'm even considering getting the Gemtech Outback II suppressor as an accessory. It seems this .22 was made for it!
