Fifth Grader Takes Handgun From Pre-Kindergartner

Not quite what Eddie the Eagle teaches, but in this case the fifth-grader clearly made the right call.

School officials say a fifth-grader took it away from the boy and turned it over to a principal. No one was hurt.

Austin, TX -- Authorities in Texas want to know what a five-year-old was doing with a loaded gun at school.

The pre-kindergarten student reportedly displayed the handgun outside the cafeteria at an Austin elementary school Tuesday.

School officials say a fifth-grader took it away from the boy and turned it over to a principal. No one was hurt.

Officials also say they don't believe the five-year-old meant to harm anyone. He just wanted to show the gun to other students.

School district police say the adult responsible for the gun could face charges.

One thing I can't stand is a Firearm not properly secured. Times have changed.I have
alot of guns and 3 safes for all of them. When I was small my father, kept guns in every
closet in the house(execpt mine). But the one thing I knew.I could burn down the barn,
wreck the car, spill paint on the garage floor, but if I ever touched a gun without him
knowing, was the absoulute worst thing I could do. I "NEVER" ever touched a gun without him (when I was younger). Some Kids don't get the same kind of parenting that
most of us "use to" get.... The Parent should be responsible and they should may both
the parent and child take several gun saftey courses.

Kid's mom's live-in boyfriend is probably selling crack out the front door.

Guess it depends on who has access. To me a gun in a safe is worthless. I've got guns all over the house and they're all loaded and chambered. An empty gun is also worthless. I have a wife and 13 year old daughter who are both gun savy and they're both trusted to use them anytime they want. My daughter has three guns of her own but she'd never dream of doing anything stupid with them.

Well Rebel,I have 2 kids under 10 so gun safes are mandatory.Between them they have
at least 16 neighborhood friends and a dozen more that come over after school. You correct that a loaded gun is "USELESS" but I have to protect my kids and everyone's
kid who comes into my house. I do keep my trusty Remington lever action shotgun
right by my side at night.

Why did you pick lever action instead of a pump?

I agree, but I don't allow my kids to remain at home alone at the age they are at now so its not a problem. When He gets older I will probably change this policy somewhat. I also believe a kid who is not around guns will be more curious about them and thus more prone to mess with them out of fascination.

Hmm, maybe he meant Winchester. I know Marlin has a .410 lever action but don't think they have a full power (12 ga). DANA are there any other modern lever action shotguns you know of ? I like lever guns a lot.

I can't think of any 12 Ga lever action shotguns being made today. Winchester made a couple of lever guns at the turn of the century and now makes a lever .410. Marlin made a lever .410 which they gave away with purchase of some number of shares. Savage made a .410 barrel for the t/d Mod 99. I may have missed some but these are the ones that come to mind (weak that is ).

sounds reasonable to me, that's how I do it and my kids are much younger.
As a side note, I'm not sure it applies, but I dont let my kids play with toy guns either. Airguns=yes, real weaponry = yes. NEVER toy guns. Funny part is, .....

I forgot why I imposed that rule.

My Dad left his guns in a closet. He kept a few shells for his deer rifle on the shelf above the closet. I knew where they were and it wasn't a problem. My friends being over wasn't a problem either. Their Dads probably had similar arrangements in their house. Rural Missouri, everyone knew about guns and ALL the kids knew not to mess with them.

Nowadays it's not so easy as you can train your kids but what about his friends? I plan on getting a gun safe as soon as my kid is walking. Not to protect him as I plan on raising him the same way I was raised. My parents were pretty lenient but I also knew that no meant NO!!! The guns are NOT meant to be touched. The safe is there to protect the kids whose parents are too shortsided to at least teach them gun safety.

I have an old 410 shotgun that has no firing pin in it. I plan on leaving it in a corner in the living room. As far as my son will know it's a real working gun and if he touches it without my permission he will get in trouble. If he asks to see it I will show it to him everytime until it's not a "new thing" and he just ignores it. That's my plan anyway.

Sounds like the 5th grader had learned the NRA's gun safety. If you find a gun where it's not supposed to be, tell an adult. I think on the person of a kindergartener counts as being where it's not supposed to be.
