Cop breaks up drug deal next to squad car

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) -- Police Cpl. Mike Swygart said he did not believe it at first when someone told him two men were making a drug deal next to his patrol car. Swygart said he was on a break having a cup of coffee Friday night when a person told him what was going on outside.

"I laughed because I thought no one would be so foolish as to handle illegal drugs next to a police car," Swygart wrote in his report. "He looked at me and told me that he was not joking."

Swygart walked outside and spotted two men in a car parked next to the squad car, holding what appeared to be bags of marijuana.

"I opened the passenger side door and shouted, 'Police, don't move!' Both suspects dropped the baggies and let them fall on the front seat," he said.

Officers detained the two men and reported seizing two small bags of marijuana as well as some drug paraphernalia and pills.

What is really sad, this Barney had to be TOLD there was drug deal going down beside him. Without someone pointing out the crime this clueless cop would have finished his doughnut and drove away while the dealers laughed at him.

Actually, it sounded to me like the officer was inside a shop, having coffee and probably could not or did not see his car. It sounds to me like the reporter was doing the best job at making the officer sound like Barney Fife...they (LEO) don't have ESP or Crystal balls you know.........

Since drug dealers don't wear neon signs on their heads announcing they're doing something illegal, unless they were doing something highly suspicious or unusual there would be no reason for the officer to suspect something. Especially if they were being low key about it.

I guess the customer walking in that told the Barney about the drug deal must have ESP then.

I assume he was either walking by or just had a better angle of view. Aware, concerned citizens assist LE's all the time. And yes the officer may have been paying more attention to his lunch. Since you refer to the officer as a Barney is it safe to assume you don't like cops?

I am referring to this LEO as Barney. Apparently the dealers know him also; otherwise they wouldn't have showed so little concern for his presence.

Having been around a little while I know that police forces are representive of the population they are SUPPOSED to protect and serve. Simply wearing a uniform does not raise them to God like status - some individuals within a force are good solid citizens - others are lazy, some are wife beaters and still others will sell and buy drugs through their patrol car window. This one thought it was incredulous that dealers would sell drugs outside of his car but by his own admission he would never have caught them without a "civilian" (hate that term when referring to police and citizens) repeatedly informing him of the illegal activity. He isn’t even smart enough to know he should at least try to hide how stupid he is.

I posted this..not to poke fun at the police..but to show how brazen and at times stupid criminals are....I slow down on the highway when I see a cop...even if he/she is way out of their area...better safe than getting a ticket...kinda silly to do something near a cop car....but then we had some kids at the new walmart put a shopping car on top of a patrol car and were takeing pictures of it when the cop came out...go figure.
