Recently, we went through dealing with the beaurocracy of state government and found the most rude, obnoxious state employees I have ever met. I worked for the state of NC for several years, which is what brought me down here.

Earlier this year, the state IRS sent me a nastygram saying that according to their records, they did not receive our tax return from four years ago. They only knew this because the feds report income to the states for comparison sake. Nothing like getting a notice FOUR YEARS later that they never got the return. With the "guilty until proven innocent" tax code, the burden of proving the fact that I did indeed pay taxes was on my shoulders.

Since there was no W2 on file with a return, it was assumed that we paid ZERO in taxes to the state, although they are aware that is false. So, we got a bill for almost $2200, including penalties, interest, and principle for four years of tax debt, assuming we paid nothing in taxes.

The first two state agents I talked to were condescending, rude, and obnoxious. It was automatically assumed that I had done something wrong and that I was a criminal. They never followed through on sending me payment options. I got a final notice nastygram while waiting for their paperwork that never showed up. They threatened liens, confiscation of bank accounts and property, garnishments, etc. Funny that this state just spent $20 million from a "slush fund" for personal political favors but they want to steal my property and money to pay a tiny debt by comparison.

I went through the trouble of getting a copy of my W2 reissued from my employer and sent it to the tax office. Still nothing in reply. I was originally told if that I could prove I paid taxes, then they would recompute my taxes. Another nastygram. I called again and finally got a nice agent who confirmed that they had received my W2 and recomputed taxes, interest, etc. I am still getting hosed for $220 or so, which is much better than the previous total. Since fighting the system is not worth my time and effort to erradicate the remainder, I figure I am better off just paying the extortion money. That total includes civil penalties, four years of interest, and principle, so my original tax debt was obviously pretty small. As I recall, it was so minute that I didn't even recall how much it was and the tax returns are probably buried in a box somewhere in my house, but I was not able to lay a hand on it immediately.

Since I made arrangements to pay the much smaller bill, I was told that all future proceedings on any asset seizure and garnishments will cease. I told her that it is good, since I guarantee that I will have more guns and ammo than any sheriff's deputy they send to my house to take any of my property. She was not amused. :uzi:

I really dislike the gumint and all her employees and those of the state, city..even those who make thier sandwiches or take out the garbage...but, even Rufus, would not mention guns, and the possibility of a fight! You clearly have a larger "package" than mine. My hat's off to you.

Good grief!!!! You guys are definetly not paying the proper respect to the elite IRS,who sit on the throne on the right hand of Uncle Sam.
You may not realize it but you may have gotten a note in your file over those disrespectful and possibly threatnening words to be used in the future.
Hummmm,sounds a bit far fetched,but you never know,some elite folks with the big head can be mighty vindictive!

You think you have rights? Wait till the IRS gets a hold of you. They can go through your house, your phone records, they'll probe arse if they think you got an asset hid up there. Their powers make the Patriot Act look like rules for kindergarten tag.

That is what I miss about having grown up in New Hampshire. No income tax, no sales tax. Property taxes are a bit high, but then again, they are here, too. In NC, we get hit with property, sales, and income tax.

Are you, by chance, worling in interstate commerce? The Railroad Workers Reform Act grants people ingaged in interstate commerce (Truck Drivers, Airline Pilots, & Railroad Workers) the right to claim their state of residency for tax purposes. Where you live or where you earn 50% of your income, if you were driving for a trucking company 4 years ago you could claim you were a resident of Tennessee, and be exempt from paying North Carolina State income tax.

Nope. Then again, NC finds ways to tax you, anyway. Example: I buy a new car in Tennessee or New Hampshire which do not charge sales tax. I go to register it in NC, where I live. I would have to pay sales tax here.

I used to work for a municipal gummint,but I didn't treat people like dirt. If my job required that I had to do so I would change jobs. :cheer: :right:

TN has a constitutional protection against income tax. We keep reminding our rep's about it everytime they try something and the protests begin

I just don't understand how anyone could work for evil scum that steals money and abuses folks like the irs has done, at least in the past. I have read some really unbelieveable stories and I don't doubt the truthfullness of those stories. when people have unlimited power, and, answer to no one, this is a recipe that just plain causes abuse. Again, i say, I just don't know how people can work for this evil group, let alone look at themselves in the mirror. You know everyone is afraid of them, they probably have no friends...shunned by all! And so they should be! They are sure to investigate everyone they know! Hell, the security guys where I work check out employees! One got caught but, they just demoted him. I would have fired his butt! That's the max legal I could do but, I assure you, I'd like to do much, much more! If anyone he checked on knew, i'd bet they would sue him! But, the irs would proably reward such a person. GGGGGRRRRrrrrr! I'm get mad as heck! Just thinking about them!

Rufus, I do understand how you feel, but some of us actually try to change things from the inside. We are pushing for the local politicians to be accountable for their actions. I know what you are all thinking, but you gotta start somewhere.

I find very little redeemable in politicos. Bush has done a thing or two I agree with and was actually surprised he had the nerve to do. But, he, and Jeb, are the only one's I can say anything positive about. I guess you are right, gota start somewhere but, i think dragging thier sorry butts out on the steps and kicking the manure out of them is a more pleaseing, and effective, way to deal with thier collective treason. Since that is not legal, or possible....i guess all i can do is remain disgusted and have faith that God will one day give them all thier just deserts. In my opinion, they are all a bunch of self serving swine and deserve the sword! Now that we most certainly, in my opinion, are all going to be victums of vote scams, I guess we'll never be able to get rid of them and get some decent folks in office. I think it sucks! I know government service has a way of makeing even the most decent person a scoundrel but, at least for a while, we may have some decent folks if only the old, career criminals of government could be removed. Since that is not going to happen, i think we should just expect more of the same. I know my comments seem defeatist, at best. But, why lie to yourself? They always do the same crap, it's only a matter of time.

Stupid people. I'm disgusted with them.

Stupid people should not be allowed to vote! They screw thing up for the rest of us who, right or wrong, at least, are aware of what's going on and, have some idea of what's going on! :nod:

I work for a private engineering firm that primarily employs me at the benefit of the DOT. Our gov. is a sleasebag but I get paid well.

I really did not mean him. I refer to our elected ones. Not those who just work. I, too was once a member of a municipal government. But, i was just a mechanic, I did not have anything to do with screwing the citizens.

I am sorry I was not clear on that point.
