Went to the range today, the first time in a couple of months.
The last time I went the owners decided that it would be a good
time half way through my shooting session to go out and spray "Round Up"
on the weeds. That tied us up for about an hour. I was so mad that as soon
as I could get my rifle I left. This time the owners were not around, and for
the most part it was pretty good shooting. My hand loads are really starting
to pay off, I am starting to get clover leafs at 100 yds using my Savage model 10
in .308. Thanks Shaun for the load recommendations.
While I have not been to the shooting range, I have been shooting. For the
last couple of months my family and I have been going up to the forest
and plinking. My local range says you have to be 10 to shoot rifle and 14 to shoot
pistol. My son is 7 and my daughter is 6. I have been teaching my kids to
shoot using my Ruger 10/22. I have to say that has been more of a blast for
me than going to the range and hitting paper.
Last weekend I taped some game tokens (we them get from the local pizza
place) to a target. I had walked off a hundred yards and we tried to hit
them. I let my wife and kids go first, my wife was the only one to hit one of
them, my son was about 1" away from two of the tokens, not bad shooting
for a 7 year old, using a 10/22. After they were done, and my .308 had
literally knocked my wife on her butt, I stepped up to the mound and hit the
remaining 4 with 4 shots. I did not hit any dead center, all of them were on
the edges. My son then started calling me Davie Crockett, and started to
sing the song.
You know:
Born on a mountain top in Tennessee,
Greenest state in the land of the free.
Raised in the woods so's he knew every tree,
Killed him a bear when he was only three.
Davy, Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.
Fought single handed through the Injun war,
Till the Creeks was whipped and peace was restored.
And while he was handling this risky chore,
Made himself a legend, forevermore.
Davy, Davy Crockett the man who don't know fear.
He went of to Congress and served a spell
Fixin' up the government and laws as well.
Took over Washington, I heard tell,
And patched up the crack in the Liberty Bell.
Davy, Davy Crockett, seein' his duty clear.
When he come home, his politickin' was done,
While the western march had just begun.
So he packed his gear, and his trusty gun
And let out a grinnin' to follow the sun.
Davy, Davy Crockett, Leadin the Pioneer.
While I did enjoy going shooting today, I enjoy going out into the woods more
with my family and just plinking. I guess some of it is, this is how I learned to
shoot, I never saw a shooting range till I was 13 and my father started to
shoot competition. Besides who does not want to look good in their son's
eyes?
I think next weekend instead of going to the range I will be going up in the
hills with the family.
