Thumbs down Sen.Durbin crosses the line...

As I'm sure you've heard ...

Last Tuesday, a Senate colleague -- Richard Durbin of Illinois -- compared our soldiers' handling of detainees at the naval detention center at Guantanamo to the heinous actions taken years ago by "Nazis, Soviets in their Gulags or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings."

That's what the second highest ranking Democratic senator had to say about our soldiers ... U.S. soldiers.

An estimated 12 million died as slave laborers, in the death camps, or in field executions at the hands of the Nazis. Twenty million or more perished in Soviet gulags or at the hands of Stalin, and over 1.5 million people were murdered in Cambodia's killing fields from 1975 to 1979.

How many people have been killed at Guantanamo Bay?

Zero.

That's right ... zero.

And yet ... how many lives have been saved by the men and women of our military at Guantanamo?

How many terrorist attacks have been prevented or deterred by the information gleaned there?

Make no mistake ...

In captivity at Guantanamo are enemy combatants. They are in jail cells -- where they belong ... and NOT on the battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan ... or on the streets of Nashville or Boston or Miami or New York.

Shameful does not begin to describe this heinous slander against our country and the brave men and women risking their lives every day to defend it.

At best, this was a grievous misstatement. At worst, a damaging display of demagoguery.

Senator Durbin has had ample opportunity to apologize without qualification, but has refused.

A full and official apology is in order, as well as a full and official retraction of his comments from the Congressional Record.

The Senator is right. The US is being very cruel to them. We should immediately give each detainee a TV, a sauna, jacuzzi, host educational programs for them like Terror 101, and just in general be real nice. After all, they probably didn't mean it. Right?

Not the first self-serving politician aaaahole to publically compare
something the US is doing now to NAZI's (or specifically Hitler).
There's been a bunch of them recently, both repulicans and democrats.
John Stewart (The Daily Show, Comedy Central) made quite a good joke out of it the other day.

Talking

Howsabout we send the poor misunderstood Tangos to Neverland for the duration? I'm sure they'd love the train rides and amusement park, and the animals. Right about now, the Guvmint could probably get from MJ pretty cheap. Use those Undocumented Immigrants to run the place.

Then we can send these danged UberLib politicos to Gitmo for a refresher course in Patriotic Americanism. Those who fail the course are sent upriver to the Cuban Ministry of Prisons. :right:

Doing the Dick dance?

What a Moron.

WASHINGTON - Under fire from Republicans and some fellow Democrats, Sen. Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures.

"Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."

His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.

"They're the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them," he said.

The apology came a week after Durbin, the Senate minority whip, quoted from an FBI agent's report describing detainees at the Naval base in a U.S.-controlled portion of Cuba as being chained to the floor without food or water in extreme temperatures.

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings," the senator said June 14.

The comment created a buzz on the Internet and among conservative talk radio hosts, but Durbin initially refused to apologize.

"This administration should apologize to the American people for abandoning the Geneva Conventions and authorizing torture techniques that put our troops at risk and make Americans less secure," he said the day after his initial comments.

By last Friday, Durbin was trying to clarify his comments, yet the White House and top Republicans including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist refused to relent. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, in an interview scheduled for broadcast Wednesday on Fox News radio's "The Tony Snow Show," tried to equate the comment with actress Jane Fonda calling U.S. soldiers war criminals during a visit to North Vietnam in 1972.

On Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley — a fellow Democrat — added his voice to the chorus of criticism, saying, "I think it's a disgrace to say that any man or woman in the military would act like that."

Durbin said in his apology: "I made reference to Nazis, to Soviets, and other repressive regimes. Mr. President, I've come to understand that's a very poor choice of words."

I did notice that none of the Farm Box Office Channels (NBC, ABC, CBS) carried a word of his original speech, but broadcast his "apology".

Sadams guards yes. Taliban maybey although I do not believe that regime was ever recognized nor a signitary to the Conventions. Al Qada on the other hand is not recognized in any fashion hence the Geneva Conventions do not apply to them period.

If we truly followed the proper conventions of modern warfare, these 'Insurgents' would be summarily shot. They are enemy combatants operating in a warzone in civilian dress, and committing acts of terror against non-combatants.

Ideally, Gitmo shouldn't have to exist as a prison. Just need a ditch, a dozer and an MG team in Jihadistan. Military justice is harsh, brutal and very final.
Guaranteed no repeat offenders . . . :cheer:
