Ok...now with O'Conner out as a Supreme Court Justice, and Chief Justice Renquist about to have to make a decision because of his health problems, it looks more and more like Republican President George W. Bush will get an opportunity to have a long lasting influence on the supreme court with a couple of nominations.

This is gonna get really interesting. But...you can be sure the Democrats have been planning a long time for who they will push for replacements.

Yeah, the stuff is about to hit the fan. You know the democrats will fight this with everything they have. They can't win any elections so they have to try to gain power through the courts. Aside from the fact they would fight Bush's nominees just because it's Bush.

...and that's where the dirty politicking takes over. Both party's potential nominee(s) list will be picked apart endlessly till some lesser known judge with a record not clearly established yet will likely have a better chance than some well known existing top level judge of getting approved for a Supeme Court Justice.

I f I knew Bush was competent enough not to screw us anymore I would prefer him to nominate some liberal whacko judge and then let the Republicans Filibuster it in the senate just to piss of the DEMS.

Yeah, the big news locally is that the Democrats are looking forward to 'restructuring the Courts'.

Scary.

But, then again, I decided a long time ago not to sweat the things I cannot change.

And sending letters to Senators, House Representatives, President, and the like is useless since they are out for their own agenda (uncaring if they get the next term or not as long as the big money is made from special interest groups) so everyone's voice goes unheard.

I'm afraid our only hope in this case is if the Republicans have enough havos to hang in there against the Democrats and fight for who they think would best benefit us and not run like polical cowards.

I also think that the two sides get together at times and figure out a way to collectively stuff us but we just aren't aware of the right side turning on us at times.

I'd like it better if she'd step infront of a bus...or...maybe step down and miss the step and break her hip! Like janet reno, death is not good enough for her.

After reading Sunday's paper it seems it is just a question of which Hispanic gets the position. :lucky:

I strongly disagreed with her sometimes, but I think Mrs. O'Connor is a class act. Anyone who pisses off the Far Right half the time, and the Far Left the other half of the time, might be doing something right, like maybe actually thinking. Growing up on an Arizona ranch probably helped shape her as a pragmatist instead of an ideologue.

If I understand right, she's resigning to take care of her husband, who has Alzheimer's. That should cause her enough grief to satisfy the people who don't like her, but she has my best wishes...

Troy she had a great dissenting piece in the recent land grab for taxes decision.

Whatever wrongs she may have done in the past, she earned my respect that day.

Someone made note that it may be Bush's White House counsel; Alvarez, I believe.

You know you don't hear a whole lot out of the talking heads from either side about how they are only nominating them because of their (insert here) minority status.

A lot of people are talking up Alberto Gonzales, and that doesn't sit well with me. I have no respect for a man who writes memo's splitting hairs about what constitutes torture. I find it incredible that he could argue that it's just fine unless it causes permanent, irreversible damage. By that definition, splinters under the fingernails don't qualify, because the victim will heal.

There is also the point that torture is a notoriously unreliable method of collecting information, that it does us more damage than good by pissing off people, etc. In WWII, many Germans surrendered to American forces, rather than fight to the bitter end, because we had a reputation for having treated prisoners well in WWI.
