Back to the future
Soldiers have been saying it for two decades — get rid of the M9 and go back to a .45 caliber. Now Army weapons developers want to do just that. (For subscribers only)
Key here is the weapons developers want it but it might boil down to who (and what companies) Congressmen and Army officials have a financial interest in and "loyalty" to.
I side with the .45 ACP.

I highly doubt this, I don't see the armed forces going to .45 GAP, or at least I hope not. I would love to see xd's in our servicemen and women's hands, but only if they came out with a 45 ACP platform, and I don't see that happening.
Would a H&K USP be plausible?

Kimber ? they've made some 1911A1 pistols for the USMC
I heard that the gun to replace the m9 is going to be decocker and first shot double action second single... thats the only features I know of.
Excluding special operation units I think the "cocked and locked" days are over. Sad to say.

Ruger Manual Safety P-Series pistols offer the following features:
** A manual ambidextrous safety that, when engaged, prevents firing unless the lever is returned to the "fire" position.
** Ruger Camblock design that reduces felt recoil and dissipates stress.
** High visibility front and rear sights.
**P95PR and KP95PR models feature a new, textured frame and Picatinny-style accessory rail.
** P345 pistols feature a new frame with checkered grip areas, front-strap, and back-strap, loaded chamber indicator, magazine disconnect, and internal lock.
** KP345PR and P345PR models include a frame-integral Picatinny accessory rail.
**All P-Series pistols are designed to be easily maintained and can be field-stripped into five major subassemblies for cleaning, without the need for special tools.
** 15 - round models not available in all states and locales. 10 - round models are available where required to meet state and local regulations limiting magazine capacity.
BTW, Uncle Sam? I will take all the M9's off yer hands for free. They will be checked and re checked, then sold with 40% of the profits to be returned to the US Military.....with 17 or 18 of the newest kept on hand for personal use/collection...
I am also in aposition to take all the 9mm ammo off your hands for use in the same fashion.......
I am a fan of ruger autos all the way, I have a customized p90 that I shall not part with. And I know first hand that they can shoot right with an H&K.

What's the point? It'll just cost a lot of money to switch. Is there some
reason the .45 is better? I thought they were about equally effective with
good ammo. Even if the .45 is a better stopper with that ball stuff the
military might have to use. 15 shots of 9mm has the potential to go further
than 9 shots of .45. Right? I thought that's what the military has pistols for anyway. For when they run out of rifle ammo, or when the rifle malfunctions.
They can hold more shots of 9mm. I understand the .45 is usually preferred by
consumers like us for personal defense and home defense to the 9mm, but
I think more shots is probably more useful for most military situations. If weight
and bulk weren't an issue they would probably just carry a second rifle as
backup.
The 9mm potential and Mag capacity vs. the .45s potential and Lack of Capacity.
This is always a debate that both the 9mm fans and the .45 fans consider frivolous.
I can see Both sides of the issue, but to post my opinion I would rather tote 3-10 round mags full of Full weight .45 fmj, than 3-15 round mags of 9mm fmj. (considering they pick a decent .45)
afterthought "Heck a back up rifle would be pretty cool too if I could handle the weight."
