plinking targets?

what are some fun things to shoot at? i know cans are a perennial favorite and i have heard using "necco waffers" candy. any seasoned vet's of the plinking world got suggestions? i know you should never break glass but what can you "blow up" or otherwise derive added entertainment from blasting holes in? B.T.W. this will be with a .22 rifle at about 25-50 yards. ~Ryan

Once in a while, we get a case of the sam's club brand soda. If you shake them and hit them with a big enough hp, they really explode.

Clay pigeons hanging from a tree limb with fishing line. They spin and swing, bounce up and down with the wind. Challenging. Almost empty propane torch bottles.(in a very large clear area, never know which way they're going) When I was a kid I loved shooting cans of freon but they cost too much now. Water balloons or just balloons. AOL disks.

I had to execute an old computer monitor the other day. In case you're wondering, 12ga slugs over penetrate just a tad.

My home town used to have an open air city dump. All kinds of stuff to shoot there including some of the biggest rats you ever saw. But I shot a tv set once from about 20 ft. Picture tube imploded I didn't get cut but I don't see how with all that glass buzzing by my ears and had several holes in my clothes. Guess it's true what they say. The good Lord looks out for kids and idiots and I was both that day. Course I've done dumber stuff, like the time I filled a pimento jar with firecracker powder put a long fuse on it and put it in an empty 5 lb. coffee can and lit the fuse. Rattled windows for two blocks. Left a hole in the ground a foot wide and eight inches deep.

cut a 2x4 about 3 feet long... drill a bunch of 1/8" holes along the wide side..... insert golf tees in the holes.....place paint balls on the tees..... shoot the paint balls first, then the tees. Placing white poster board behind the 2x4 makes for some interesting designs after the paint balls are hit.

Also I've been known to take a small conatiner of sugar-water to the range and "paint" my targets with the stuff and pick off the bugs that come after the mixture.

lets not get started on home made explosives. We didnt need no internet to get the recipe, I had a mate in the army, they taught him! oh, and lots of ex mil. .303 ammo in boxes for the price of the box. And you could by cannon wick at the sporting goods store! what were they thinking? what possible sensible purpose could a couple 18 yr olds have with cannon wick? anyway, back to plinking ...

A lot of good ideas for things to shoot. With my 10/22 I like to use used shotgun shells randomly strewn around at different distances. Sometimes I can get some one to play a game you get to shoot shells until you miss, then it is the next guys turn.

Driving range golf balls. You can shoot them with rifles, pistols, or have your buddy toss them up for some shotgunnage. Most times they don't get destroyed, so they are generally reusable. I really only kill them with 7.62

Thumbs up

The steel soup and veggie cans are better than aluminum cans, as they hold up better and are more 'active'! The lighter soda cans sometimes don't move when the bullet zips thru.
Empty 12 gauge hulls are great, as are the yellow foam practice golfballs - they don't fly as far as the real balls when hit - you can get more hits before having to go chase them down. Tennisballs are good too.
Potatoes, oranges and apples, even eggs (though stinkier in the sun!) are all good bio-degradable targets.
Small pumpkins in the autumn! Great fun!

For a real challenge - white aspirins taped onto a black posterboard, at 25 to 50 yards - they 'splash' nicely when hit.

What my Dad and I use.

Steel plate welded at a slight angle(to deflect bullets) with rectangle tubing "legs"(a side profile view would look like an upside down "T")

I was 12. Internet wasn't even a dream then, Heck, home computers weren't even close to being. I just had a good imagination and a string of 500 firecrackers had a long fuse running down the center.

When I took the CCW class the instructor threw out golf balls and everyone had a blast, new and experienced alike. Also a couple of bowling balls, they didn't hold up too good with the 8mm BAR. Held up ok with most of the medium pistol ctgs. Tommygun and Uzi 9 w/silencer in full auto pushed them around a bit. When you hit a golfball with a 44 mag it will blow up from the release of the rubberband wrap tension on the inside. Also empty water bottles that you usually throw away. He said we could shoot anything that could be brought in by vehicle,up to and including a howitzer.
All in all it was fun plinking..........................ALR
(He supplied the guns and ammo!)
