I lost a friend Monday night!

A San Leandro, CA Police Officer that was a good friend to everyone around him, was shot and killed Monday about 10:30 PM. He had served as a Police Officer with the San Leandro Police Department for about 3 years, and had worked very hard to qualify. It was a life’s dream job, and while he had many years experience working in Silicon Valley in the Electronics Industry, he had wanted to be a Police Officer since he was a little boy.

He leaves behind his Widow, a 13 year old son and a 6 year old daughter, all of whom he had brought to our range to shoot, at various times.

What happened at the scene is mostly guess work and inputs from the people who were present. Dan had been called to look into a disturbance that was loud noise (a drinking party), and had discussed this with several of the neighbors as well as the people responsible for the noise, and after about 20 minutes of discussion, they were all willing to cooperate and reduce the noise level as well as some would tolerate a little more noise than normal until about 11:00 PM.

Dan was standing on the sidewalk, and the people he was talking to were standing on the front yard of one house. Then a car pulled up behind Dan, and three young guys got out and one began talking to Dan. Suddenly in the middle of the conversation, the young man who was talking to Dan pointed a 9mm semi-auto at Dan and began shooting. There are various numbers being discussed, but the highest number was 14 bullet cases were found on the ground by the investigating officers. Dan had not pulled his handgun, as it was found secured in his holster, so the first shot must have disabled or totally disoriented him to the point he couldn’t defend himself, and yes, he was wearing body armor (it is required by all Police Departments at least in the San Francisco Bay Area, if not all over California). The killer drove the car away, and it was found less than a block from the scene of the crime.

The people present knew who the perpetrator was and identified him by name, and the investigators went to the house he lived in (in another city), and searched (with warrant) for anything that might be evidence. Tuesday the sister of the perpetrator found out the police were looking for her brother and notified the Police where he could be found, (in a third city). An uncle had talked to him and said, “I told him, you kill a Police Officer, you gotta pay for it!” The SWAT formed up around the apartment where the perpetrator was supposed to be, and when they went inside, he was asleep. He was taken into custody, and will be tried for murdering a Police Officer which could invoke the death penalty.

Needless to say the mood at our range is rather glum, and will be for a while.

That is awful news, and he will be in our prayers, as will the rest of his friends and family.

And as for the shooter, nothing the US legal system could do to him will be enough. He will occupy a special place in !!!! for what he did.

loss

Sorry for your loss. Cops should never work alone, and should work at least in groups of 3.

I hope they fry the little ****.

Thanks to everyone! I am concerned for his family, too, and I just hope that everything will work out for them. Prayer seems to be the only thing that we all can do, as each individual has his or her own problems and ways of dealing with them, including his family. THANKS AGAIN!

Gyrene...I'm really sorry for the loss of your friend. Hope the perp is given a fair trial five minutes before they execute him. :target:

I wonder if the perp was a gang member doing his initiation thing?

Gyrene,
Sounds like the bad guy was caught but it doesnt change the loss of a friend.
Ox was right except he said five minutes. I would say dont waste a trial. 2 minutes is a waste. 2800 fps sounds about right.

I lost a friend (police officer) a few years back. The situation was about as senseless as this. Your concern about the family is admirable. Do they have need of money, or is that covered? You could set up a paypal account that and we could donate money - if they are in need of help. Just an idea.

All that I can think to do is say Thank You to him for serving the people's trust, and Thank You to everyone else who does the same job and faces the same risks. We can never bring him back but we can honor what he did when he was here.

SilverRun - The San Leandro Police Department has set up a fund for them. As a group, many of us that were his friends have collected money that will be added to that fund. I am not soliciting donations, however, if anyone does feel a pressing need to assist by donating, please feel free to contact the San Leandro, California Police Department, and arrange to make the donation through them. Your condolences and prayers are enough.

I understand that the Police Union has a fund set aside, for the children of officers killed in the line of duty, that will pay the costs of their college education. That should be a little relief to Dans' widow, if she is able to think of the future at this time.

There are some updates to the activities that occurred at the time of the shooting. The perpetrator is now identified as having been at the location, when Dan arrived, and did not arrive later in a car. Dan had 3 drivers licenses (including the DL of the perpetrator) in his hand, and had radioed in for wants or warrants on all three. At that time, apparently the perpetrator shot Dan under the arm (where the armor doesn't protect) with a 10mm, Dan went down and then according to some people present, the perpetrator taunted Dan, and shot and taunted . . . more than 8 shots.

Now his female attorney is planning a "Meth Defense", claiming he is not accountable, because he was on Methedrine at the time of the shooting.

My question, is: "WHO CAUSED HIM TO TAKE THE METHEDRINE?"

Gyrene, I dont know what to say that is appropriate for this other than I am sorry for the losses that you, the family, and any others are suffering. Be glad that your friend left a good example of what a fine man should be. Stay well, you and all.

Troy.
