Shooting Times

Does anyone have an opinion on the magazine Shooting Times? They sent me this sales pitch, you get the magazine for only 10 dollars.

I'm inclined to say what the heck and do it, it's a gun magazine for 10 bucks. But something tells me a magazine they only charge $10 for might not be worth the paper it's printed on. Lots of fluff? Let me know what you think..........

My only subs are the American Rifleman and Shotgun News. The others are too 'hit & miss' to get a sub. I look at them at the store - if they have some good stuff that issue, I'll get it.

There is a `sameness` to all gun magazines these days, and like Big Dog I browse first and if there`s an article or 2 that strike a cord, I may purchase, although most American gun magazines start around the 8 dollar mark here, and can hit 12 bucks, I gotta really consider my bank balance. I really do not want to tally up the magazines in the box beside my bed... There`d be a new gun in it.

Wifey poo works at the magazine store. I get free rental, so I dabble in a bit of everything.

Talking

Much as I like guns, I can only read so many new articles on 1911's, Glocks and Remchesters. Wish someone would publish a "Milsurp Owners Journal" - now that's the kind of rag I'd subscribe to!

I browse the mags first to see if there are any articles I'm interested in. If there are I will probably buy it. But Johnny is right they are all about the same, or at least sure feel that way. Maybe some of those Editors and/or writers will read this thread and take a hint. Stop writing fluff pieces and do some hard comparison pieces. Ya ya I know in my dreams.

I like shooting times (the do a decent job of covering both expensive and cheap guns)..but their reviews are all "love and wonderment"....I doubt any gun can be reviewed without finding a few bad points. That honesty is really not seen in publishing these days.

I can understand why though, I wrote a review on dragunov type stocks and trashed ATI...and have not been able to even get a press release from them since.

That's about what I figured, thanks everyone for their advice. I'm going to give it a try. If I hate it, I won't renew my subscription.

Try a copy of Man at Arms, it's produced by the NRA, a very excellent mag about old American arms.
