Guys, here's an engineering experiment I did today. I was driving on the highway at 70mph and my mpg computer registered 32mpg. I was not impressed, as it is a Hyundai Elantra and has gotten 38mpg on the same stretch during break-in (travelling 55ish). I decided to just test a theory, and dropped the cruise down to 60mph. 39mpg.

Why? Turbulent fluidic resistance as studied in undergraduate engineering is proportional to the square of the velocity. So (7/6)^2 = 49/36 = roughly 4/3. Meaning it would take 4/3 as much energy due to fluidic resistance. Now the mileage difference would be more like 40/30 if fluidic resiatance was all that mattered. Rolling friction is constant no matter what your speed is. Also, engine efficiency varies based on speed and torque, but the basic jist of it is that if you're on the open highway and can maintain a speed without your engine grumbling to keep up, you can generally save more fuel than the extra time you would spend.

But, it is well know slower speeds will result in better ,ileage. however, to drive slower sometimes puts one's life at risk as my kia car is small and the roadways have many much larger vehicle hurtling along at 70-80mph. My 34 miles per gallon are at 75+mph with the car in fifth and the tack at nearly 4000rpm. incedently, the red line is 6500rpm. When i spoke with the dealer about this he said, higher rpms will not hurt the engine. he claims the oil in the head and lower part of the engine is whipped into a "fog" of oil which well lubes all engine parts much better than id the engine were running routinly at much lower engine speeds. however, it is my knowelage that at 65mph or even 60mph, the car would gain at least 2 more miles per gallon.

Just returned from a long weekend trip. Averaged 19.2 mpg round trip in my 1996 Ford SUV V6...nearly all highway driving at close to 74 MPH.

Filled up this morning in K.C. Cost was:

Unleaded Regular....$2.659
Mid Grade...pumps were tagged as "out of fuel"
Premium...$2.759
Diesel...$2.459

Another item affecting efficiency is the particular engine's efficiency at a given speed and torque.
