Well thinking back to Iraq, I cleaned my M4 every day after operations. But this is normal maintenance and what a well trained soldier does cause his life depends on his weapon. And every weapon system needed to be cleaned often and regularly over there if you wanted it to function and fire when needed. No matter what maker or type. But they did not have to be spotless to function. The M4-M16 is not as high maintenance as the rumors make it out to be. But for the desert I found that Rem oil worked well in these conditions as it did not attract as much heavy dirt as CLP. And most of the "cleaning" was just a quick brush off and wipe down of the bolt and inside the receiver, a couple patches thru the barrel, relube lightly and wipe down the exterior to get the dust and dirt off.
Plus I carried 12 30rd mags plus all my gear and IBA and trauma bag and dident feel my load was overly heavy. Couldent do that with 308./ 7.62X51.
So I would take my M4 again, just wish the ballistics dident drop off so bad after 250 meters.

I'm with FALPhil, go figure! I,ve got quite a few FAL's and have beat the guts out of most of them - and they just keep working.
AK's don't quit either, I may have mentioned one particular AK post dealer sample (built from an SAR1) at the shop. It's got close to 300,000 rounds through it, may get cleaned once a year whether it needs it or not, regularly gets a few drums run through it in spray and pray gear until it's too hot to hold whereupon we will unceremoniously throw it into a muddy water puddle after removing the last drum. After it quits spitting, popping and steaming we will shake the water off, check the chamber and bore, stick in another drum and cook 'er again. This rifle has never failed to work - it's amazing.
I have one M1A and for no other excuse - it's just too pretty to grab and hit the bush with. Again, being a FAL nut I have 3 in particular that would be the picking group in the event of SHTF, but the others are like the Springfield - too pretty to use for what they were originally designed.
Bottom line for me - WHATEVER I would grab on the way out the door will absolutly be 7.62X51 - no substitute for horsepower! .223 is just a hotrod squirrel killer round IMHO.

The Soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are finding that the M16 with a 223 round is inadequate for distance, power and the inability to go thru walls and vehicles. They're looking at the M14 or variants to do the job. Some designated sharpshooters or snipers are now being issued the M14. The New Springfield Carbine in 308 looks interesting.

i would grab my AK for CQB in a heartbeat.. My friends thought that i wasted my money on the AK when i told em i bought one but now everyone wants to fire it. I love my AK it is just the right mix (for me) of simple function, extreme reliability, firepower, ... basically choose your guns based on your needs and deires not just a popularity contest

it really depends on the situation and environment.

if going into a densly packed urban area i'd go with a 12 ga. trench gun. as it exells in that environment, and what gets hit by it, rarely gets back up.

if moving across lagre, open areas, a good battle rifle, somewhat like a cross between the FAL and the SKS, only lighter, and chabered for 6.5mm swede. as it would allow for good long range preformance.

if moving through a jungle/heavily forrested area i'd opt for a carbine version of the rifle previousley described for manegability.

if we're talking about mechanized warfare, and needed to be as unencumbered as possible, i'd use a sub machine gun based on the Sten, only chaimbered for .357 magnum. this is because it's light, has a good fire rate, and would be able to take care of just about anything i went up against. i mean, if a .357 can kill a bull walrus, it'll do fine against a human.

naturally, in all the scenarios i'd have a sidearm and a bayonet.

the sidearm would be a modified Hi Power, chaimbered for 9x25mm. simply because, after shooting several military-grade pistols, including the M92, the .38 special revolver, the Astra .380, and the Hi Power, i have found the Hi Power is the most comfortable to shoot, has a nice refire rate, an compfrotable amount of ready ammunition, and is far more reliable than the 92.

the bayo would be a Ka-Bar with an unserrated blade.
