A boy's first time.

I haven't been here all weekend because I was inducting my second son into a rite of passage. He turned seven in Sept. and all year has been doing homework, work around the house, and doing his best to follow instructions. As his reward, he got to go with Grandpa and Dad on his first hunting/camping trip. Hopefully, an experience he'll remember for the rest of his life.

We were after rabbit on this outing. Some would say that since we only bagged one rabbit, (that we gave to the dogs) that this was a failed hunting trip. Not so, I say. My son learned several things out in the field. He learned where to walk and stand so as to be safe while Dad and Grandpa had shotguns in the field, how to handle dogs, as well as listening to them work. He learned safety in camp, around an open fire. How to pitch a tent and build a fire and tend it.

We enjoyed meat and beans cooked over an open fire. Grandpa was in charge of the marsh mellows ... and forgot them. (We'll do that next year) We sat on the picnic table with our bellies full and watched the sun set and the (almost full) moon rise. I think the most fun he had was cutting a nasty (baked bean) fart and blaming it on Grandpa. We all laughed about that one.

All in all, a successful outing. I know because, Sunday night while getting ready for bed, he put his arms around my neck, squeezed me tight and said, "Thanks for taking me hunting Dad. Are we gonna go again sometime?"

Now, what do you think my answer was? -UR

Sounds like a great trip -- I think he learned more from your not getting much verse limiting out -- getting away is the best point the animal is the bonus.

Good work. I can't wait to take my son out. It'll be awhile, he's only 10 months old.

My son hasn't been conceived yet, but I certainly hope to have a great time with him someday, as you have, Uncle Red.

Uncle Red...now that's an example of "quality time." He'll never forget that adventure. As has been mentioned before, getting only one rabbit was not a sign of failure...it was just a good excuse for the three of you to have a great time, and for your son to start building positive memories of his outdoor experiences. :right:
