"Teens accounted for 24 percent of unwed births last year, down from 50 percent in 1970, spokeswoman Stephanie Ventura said. By contrast, significant increases in unmarried births have been seen among women ages 25 to 29, she said.

"There were 1,470,152 babies born to unmarried U.S. women in 2004, which accounted for 35.7 percent of all births in the country, the NCHS said."

To me, the interesting part is that only a quarter of the births were to teenagers, as opposed to half of them thirty-five years ago. Looks like a social sea-change to me, for better or worse.

I would like to see statistics on how many fathers are acknowledging and supporting those children, and how many are actually living with the mother. In other words, are we seeing a huge rise in single mothers and irresponsible (and/or unknown) fathers, or a huge rise in couples who are starting families without observing the formalities? Or both?

Just joking; please don't throw that beer can at me. It's half full, and you'll waste it.

Do they count lesbians as one mom or two when one gets artificially insemenated?
