| Senior Member ![]() | HAd to be the bad guy. What are your thoughts
Well, 3 weekends with the new Shirt job. Things have been going pretty smooth, just extremely busy. I knew this day would come. We have PT test due. A few failed or were marginal and have to retest in 6 mo. Iv'e caught a rash of crap for failing some of these folks. According to some, I'm sopposed to "do the right thing and earn trust" I can't watch a guy struggle through push ups and pencil whip him just because. I seriously seen some health issues going on there in some cases. Bottom line, I'm following regs. It's the commanders program, I just impliment it. The problem is, as soon as some of these folks feel they are being screwed, a bunch of the rest will not trust and confide in you. You know, you walk into a room and everyone leaves. I'm sticking to my guns. I'd rather be hated for who I am rather than be loved for who I'm not.

It's pretty simple If they can't do it because they are unfit put em on the fitness program or whatever you guy's run in your squadron. If they can't do it because of injury or what not then they can get a waiver from their PCM like I had to.

jerry - Let you conscience be your guide, be true to yourself, and when the chips are down, you will be proved correct in what you do, or did! It is a cold hard world out there, and mothers' coddled kids will have to face reality, and we don't need others to suffer because they were coddled, when they should be busted out, they should have had to face reality! Just like Marine Corps Boot Camp, you either cut it, or you get busted out. One thing is for sure, you don't want to be responsible for people getting killed because you felt bad about busting somebody out! ` |

Gyrene has the right of it. Peoples lives depend on their fitness in some lines of work. I think you will be respected more for the way you have handled it rather than by passing those that don't cut the mustard. Keep up the good work.

According to the late Georgia State Senator Edwin Gochenour (1953-1999): "It is better to be united in the truth than to be united in error. It is better to tell the truth that hurts, and then heals, than to tell a lie that heals, then kills. It is better to be hated for telling the truth than to be loved for telling a lie. It is better to stand alone with the truth than to be wrong with the multitudes. It is better to ultimately win with the truth than to temporarily succeed with a lie." who said it better than I ever could have |

I think the current Air Force fitness program is a complete joke. The ability to do pushups , sit ups and running has no bearing on an airmans ability to do there job. I know plenty of physically fit people that don't even know how to turn a wrench, however with that said "ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and get out in 78 days". Ok maybe I misquoted that a little.

All good points, & thanks for letting me vent a bit. The AF PT is a joke. I hope the rumors are true that at least the guard will be on active duty standards in 2~3 years. A couple of things make it more difficult to swallow here especially when the program seems so flawed. We don't get the turn over like AD. People are here forever. A good bunch of the people are air technicians, civilian federal employees who do this full time. they have to be in the guard to keep thier civilian job. No excuse, period. I hate having to be the traditional guardsman messing with someones regular lively hood. I do care about the folks who failed or were marginal. I'd like to see them get a bit healthier. I'n most cases, these guys smoke and or do Zero physical activity. You can only get by so long like that before it surfaces into a health issue. Again thanks for lending an ear

The way I see it, you did what you were ordered to do. I, myself would have no guilt in this matter. If you want to be a soldier, at least be sure that your'e in good enough shape to pretend to be able to drag your arse like a soldier. Jerry, it's sad. I whipped most of the young recruits for the guard in the fitness test, and I'm twice their age. I suppose that's what happens when Dr. Pepper becomes your physician, MacDonalds your accountant, and your house is a Pizza Hut, and excercise is watching a Titans game over a bathtub-full of Double-butter popcorn and a case of Budweisers.

Sounds like you are doing a good job,but you seem to be having a hard time of it. my advice is to press on,it gets easier after a while and the troops will see that they can't manipulate you with their crying and other games, they will see that you are going to do the job and do it fairly sooner or later and will accept that and respect you for it. If someone, after a few chances just won't adapt, perhaps they are in the wrong job, most will and will support you in the long run. As long as you are fair to them, for the most part the will treat you accordingly. Worked for me over a thirty year series of supervisory positions.

For God's sake don't waffle on what you do. You have apparently decided to follow regs and the Commanders wishes (a view I concur with). Those individuals who didn't hack it have X amount of time to get their acts together. They knew or suspected they were out of shape, it appears standards haven't been met for a while and everybody (wink, wink) knew it. You can either be a competent professional NCO with respect from all, although some may be grudging, or you can be a good ol' boy and in the end have no one's respect.

The USAF came up with the 5BX program. I was flying alert at the time and was DNIF for weeks . So many of us were DNIF the Flight Surgeon placed all flight crews on a 5BX waver. The USAF gave up on 5BX a few years later. DANA |
