Had a guy out here whose gun shop got burglerized a couple of years back. Unfortunately, some of the weapons he reported stolen were illegal in California, and maybe elsewhere too. I don't know the details, and I don't know how it came out, but his place is still shuttered.

Guess he was stuck between a rock and a hard place: should he alert the gendarmerie that those weapons were now out and about in the hands of unsavory types, or keep his head low and hope nobody used them?

No I really meant it; The governement believed they were doing wrong which means they probably were; which is good enough for me. Remember we have a second amendment friendly administration so I am sure it was handled precisely by the book.

I wouldn't say the present administration is friendly toward the 2nd Amendment. Neutral maybe but if they were friendly they would be repealing gun control laws.

In the many years I operated a firearms business I never had a problem with ATF. The only contacts I ever had with them were for the purpose of researching the history of guns that had passed through my hands. I kept my nose clean by operating within the law.
I knew some others who became very familiar with the ATF as results of illegal firearms transfers.
The only agents I ever had dealings with were first class law men.

Time period may have something to do with it, as well as local agency personnel. As far as what sort of people are involved in the ATF, I've come to understand that the answer is "all of the above." Good folks, terrible folks, ones who know the law, and ones who clearly have no understanding or at least respect for their role in it.

I've never had any personal experience with them, except that my transfer dealer was completely ignored in his FFL renewal, such that it was a race against the calendar for my latest transfer to come in so I could get it before the FFL expired. They pay money and are required to operate their business in order to be eligible for the license, yet whoever pushes the papers didn't seem to care about doing their job. The dealer did his paperwork long beforehand.

I met an ATF lady at my local dealer. Every 2 yrs or so, she goes through his paperwork. She seems alright, very nice and goes by the book.
I have a problem with authority, though, so I was still suspicious. LOL

My problems with the ATF have nothing to do with authority. I believe in limited authority, the problem with a number of folks in the ATF is acting as though they are above the law. A free society has laws that apply to government and citizens alike. We need laws and we need a government in order to protect freedom, but sometimes some agency of our government violates the laws, and the ATF is among the worst of these, in general. There are good and bad examples within the agency of course.

BattleRifle,
There are provisions within the law for your dealer to operate legally after the expiration of his old license and before the reissue. He's supposed to know that.
