I always get a little uncomfortable when people start thanking me for being a vet. It's like thanking me for going to work every day and feeding my family, or for not peeing in public, or something. It's just something I did, and now I'm doing something else.

What I'm trying to say is that going into uniform for a while is just something that's done. It's not so rare that anyone needs to carry on about it.

Don't want to sound churlish or ungrateful, especially when people are trying to be nice.

Thank you for protecting our country. Troy, I don't believe joining the Military is just a job. Some folks do join to get out of a bad situation at home or for the college benifits, they know who they are. Others join for more altruistic reasons as a sense of duty to the country. If you feel thanks are not nessasry, please disregaurd this message.

Troy2000 - It was due to a personal feeling, that I owed something to the rest of the Citizens of the USA, that I chose to be a Marine. I tend to see it much the same as you, it was personal between me and the USMC, I felt I owed it to them, and they were satisfied with my performance.

My service time was a long time ago, and I am content that because I did my duty for my country, my son did not have to. Nobody needs to thank me, though if they feel better for doing so, then I will accept it for all of those who are no longer here to accept it for themselves, and pass it along, to them, in my prayers.

To me it was a honor to have served.

We will be marching our Color Guard in the parade today (Saturday) followed by the float the Ladies Auxiliary put together.

Yesterday we did a free meal for all the vets and their families at the VFW Post along with a solemn flag ceremony.

Personally I would rather be thanked for having served than critcized.

I can't tell you how many times I've had high school kids ask, "Why do you support war and violence."

That's a terrible misconception many of today's youth that servicemen and servicewomen support violence and bloodshed and I even see it from time to time in people my own age.

Since I am representing the VFW I have to hold my tongue somewhat but I'd love to say, "I don't support war or death or bloodshed. I served so that your daddy could sit around and bad mouth those that unhestatingly sacrifce(d) for others."

Anyway, I enjoy hearing a 'thank you' now and then from those that obviously do appreciate those sacrifices.
