Not having a gun at all would imply a general lack of knowledge about guns, and lack of exerience. I'd start with the shotgun - excellent versatility, and easy to learn the basics on. A rimfire rifle would be a very close second.

If I didnt have one I'd get a .22 I'll reverse what Big Dog said and get a shotgun second. More rounds with a .22, easy to shoot and its addicting and will lead to bigger calibers. Well, thats how I started out and I'm perfklty Nrml.. |

I think we need some clarification. The first rifle you'd buy makes it sound like an inexperienced shooter getting his first rifle. The first rifles I shot as a kid were a .264 Winchester Mag and an 8mm Mauser. Those would NOT be my choice for a first rifle. Those are a little much for a kid. Being experienced I would get a Barret semi auto .50 Caliber. Period. Screw the .22 or the 12 gauge. If ya gotta shoot something or someone (hope you dont) then why mess with a little hole. Tear em up, turn em to liquid and have fun. |

While there's nothing I'd like more than a .50 in semiauto it only has one use, liquefying whatever you hit... With a good shotgun and a handful of shells (and a few different loads) you can kill anything from gophers to sizeable deer.
