Wish me luck...

One of the local gun stores is raffling off a nice little Ruger .30-06 with a checkered stock and attached scope rings. When I picked it up, laid my cheek on the stock and looked down the barrel, the scope rings were dead-centered on each other. May as well have been custom-made for me.

120 tickets at $5.00 each; I bought one for myself and one for my nephew. Told him, "if you win, I expect my !@#$%^&* five bucks back, understand?"

I'm not real familiar with what Ruger has, and I was too busy drooling to get the details. But it's a little thing; pretty much qualifies as a carbine. I guess I'd call it a brush gun, which might make the scope rings superflous.

Probably kicks like a mule, because it doesn't have enough weight to hold it down. But hey, how many shots should you need to bring down a deer?

On the other hand, I guess you could have a sore shoulder by the time you finished arguing with a pig...

There were six tickets left after the two I bought and I was tempted, because they were five bucks each or six for twenty five. But I managed to remind myself of my personal first rule of gambling: it stops being fun when losing hurts. I decided to finally get off my behind and send in my cruffler's app instead. Now all I have to do is figure out where I laid the paperwork.

I guess I didn't mention that it's a bolt action, not a semi.

Went rummaging online looking for it; it's definitely some sort of M77, and that's all I can guarantee. I'll have to swing by tomorrow and see what it is, and whether the tickets are sold out.

Apparently they keep a raffle going; when the tickets for one gun sell out, they hold the drawing and put up something else. Nice sales gimmick. I'd rather drop five bucks there than on the state lotteries.

Probably a Ruger M77 Mark 2. Good gun. I have a M77 in .243 from 1976. Mauser-style action.

Rats. Someone won my gun.

I don't understand it; the odds were only 119 to 1 against me...

You were right, Bookman. It was a Ruger Mk II. Seemed like a very sweet little .30-06. I've heard people badmouth Ruger hunting rifles in the past, claiming their barrels weren't up to snuff and it affects the accuracy. One guy said that when he miked his, it flared out from the breech to the crown. Anyone know anything about the Ruger barrels?
