Home for Thanksgiving

Working in transportation I usually find myself on the road on holidays to make a delivery somewhere. The employer told me I could go out on Friday and I can't remember the last time I didn't work on a holiday. So the YL is going to do laundry and I'm checking in here with my friends on Gun and Game. I hope most of you have something to do today.
It's too cold out to do anything useful outside so I'm going to stay in until we have to go to our friend's house to dine. I'm thinking I'll leave the Ka-Bar home.
I don't mind being on the road on holidays, someone has to work, and if my working gives someone else the day off to be with family then we're all happy.
One of my peeves about Thanksgiving is the fact that it's a holiday dedicated to overeating and all the restaurants are closed. I can always rely on Flying J to be open. When I'm working, it's just another day on the road, I have food in the truck, or I can eat at the Flying J. When I was living single and had Thanksgiving off I would go in search of an open restaurant. I would call around and drive all over looking for a place to eat, (I've never lived close to any truck stops) and become quite irritated with the fact that this was a day when everyone overeats and I can't find an open restaurant.
So now the YL and I have been invited to have Thanksgiving dinner with her friend and family, and they only live about a klick away.
I remember Christmas passed, I was at the a Flying J in Tennessee, I spent most of the day there, showered, breakfasted, and then had dinner. As I was leaving, and it was a perfect day, I walked out the front door and encountered a television newswoman with cameraman who stuck a microphone in my face and asked if I had a Christmas message for our military men and women. I didn't much like being ambushed as I waddled out of the Flying J overstuffed, but I wasn't going to be rude to this woman when she was addressing this subject. I thought for a moment, usually I operate mouth before engaging brain, and chose my words carefully.
"People in this country live under a blanket of security that our Government and our Military provides for them, then they have the audacity to question how the military does it’s job. If they’re not willing to pick up a weapon and stand a post then they should leave the military alone to do their job. As for our troops in the field, I would like to give them something for Christmas, it’s not much, but it comes from the heart.” At that point I stepped back from the camera, pulled my dog tags out of my shirt and saluted into the camera, holding for a full ten seconds, did an about face and walked toward the parking lot.
No one will ever be able to accuse me of being “Politically correct,” I don’t care who I offend.

As a fellow driver I can relate. Congrats on being home for the holiday and thanks for you service in and support of our military. At least with my job, I get home for most of the holidays if I choose, plus we get paid for them. No more truck stop turkey for me! Happy thanksgiving!

Went rabbit hunting this a.m. Took my oldest two boys (9 and 7). Shot at two waaay out in front of the dogs. Came home to homemade hot coco. That went a long way to warming us up since the weatherman says we had winds of 30 MPH with gusts up to 45 MPH! Had tacos for din-din. Now watching the NFL. Taking the youngest son (5) to a gun show on Sat. Good T-day here.

I could almost hear that woman saying, "Rewind, and we'll try again." as I walked back to my truck.
