A look at a few rounds

Folks may say I'm nuts for thinking a 300 RUM is a decent round for PA whitetail deer, for which 30-06 is considered a very good round. My response resembles "Well, is a 30-06 a good choice at 100yds? The 300 RUM shoots the same bullets as a 30-06, just farther away." And I assumed that that distance would only be a couple hundred yards.

And I looked at some numbers and sure enough. With the same bullets, the 300 Win Mag had about as much velocity at 100yds as a 30-06 does point blank, and the same is true for each 100yd interval after that. The 300 RUM is about 200yds ahead of a 30-06.

So if you think 30-06 is a good gun for a job, add 100yd for the 300 Win mag and 200yd for the 300 Ultra. Yesterday I would have been one happy camper to have my 300 RUM available and working, not gutted and waiting for a magazine repair.

Cheese and Rice BRG Why not just use a .338 Lapua? LOL Thanks for the info on the .300rum I hadn't heard any ballistics on that yet. Have you used it in the field?

if you can put the bullet through the heart, any rounds you have mentioned will work fine.

I sure like the 300 Ultra Mag from the trajectory stand point.

The 6" Point Blank Range of a 165gr 30-06 is 260 yards when zeroed at 220.
The 6" PBR of the 300 Win is 295 yards when zeroed at 250.
The 6" PBR of the 300 Ultra is 315 yards when zeroed at 265.

315 yards is a long ways out there to be able to hold "dead on" and still hit your 6" target at any distance out to that point. Still have to consider wind, of course.

Just compared the 270 WSM to the 270 Winchester. The WSM seems to have the same velocity at 100yd as the 270 Win does point blank.

I have heard that the 50 BMG leaves more meat intact than one may think. Also, you may want to consider loading down safely using black powder or substitute.
