About the time he said "I need help" he should have opened fire. But then that's easy enough for me to say from behind my keyboard. I'm not clear on the "You clearly hear the killer state that he is a Vietnam Vet after he exits the vehicle" is that like announcing you are a member of the Crips?

That sucks. I can't believe he didn't shoot him. What did he think the guy was going to do with the rifle?

Thats some scary $#*t. I dont always agree with cops opening fire because they feel they are in danger when the realy arent, but when you see the !!!! rifle and he's loading it in front of you, it should be an easy desicion.........light the !!!!!!! up!

i know that a lot of the members here are LEOs and retired or current military. me, i am just an armchair quarterback when it comes to this kind of situation. i would like to think i'd do the right thing, but who knows what the cop was thinking? he was not commited to taking a life in the name of the law, and he paid dearly. it shows the value of proper training though.

The deputys' name was Kyle Wayne Dinkheller. He was with the Laurens County Sheriffs Department for 4 YEARS. And, he HAD been through the academy. This happened 12JAN98. No one knows for sure why Deputy Dinkheller didn't shoot, but it had been speculated that he hesitated because the suspect had not pointed the weapon at him UNTIL it was loaded. That was the training he had received, which has since been changed (Thank God!!). It's true he waited too long. However, we can only speculate what was going through Kyles' mind. All I can say is that I was very sad when I saw this back in '00 and it still makes me sad. This can be armchair quarterbacked all day long, but the story still ends the same. An officer lost his life in a grisly manner and we are left to learn from his mistake. (The perp recieved a death sentence 20JAN00) I wish I could find it online, but the one video that is an absolute MUST-SEE is the Trooper Mark Coates video. He was a South Carolina State Trooper who was killed by a motorist high on pot. Talk about horrible! You see the entire scene as it unfolds, and you see Trooper Coates die from blood loss on camera. It is disturbing to watch, especially when you hear Trooper Coates screaming for help and watch him die right before your eyes. Then, when they play the prison interview of the perp 3 years after his sentence (life with no parole), I can guarantee you will want to shoot your TV set!! |

Sad day for the family and friends of this officer. I am glad they have changed the training. Quote:
