America and its troubles in 2006. Wow. a can a worms indeed. But heck, name a better country and why. I would love know where it is. Maybe we can start a deportation fund to that country. One way of course. If they accept immigrants that is. I truley LOVE this country and its ideals.

dont get me wrong, I love this country. I just feel that this is a country in decline. I hate to say that because this is the best country on earth(in my opinion), but if we are not careful, we will let ourselves get swamped by hard working countries, and I would hate to see that happen to this beautiful nation.

futuremarine... maybe i read 1984 too many time or something but i believe the constetution was made for a resone. our second amemdment is not the only right we need to worry about.

warning what ifs coming!!!!!

they say only a call coming from outside the US will be tapped correct? ok so everytime you or i get based in germany, korea, or whereever they should be able to listen to us? howabout some of the software enginers or whatever we have here? when they travel to some other country and report in to there home offices should they have to worry that every thing they say will be recorded and possibly leaked to compation?

next what if

suppose they do catch someone or worse they dont and we have another attack? what do you think the next step will be? lifting the ban to maybe only suspected terrorists?

sorry for the rant but i just dont beleive our government should have any more powers outside of what the constitution gave them in the first place.

P.S. i always did hate spelling class. sorry about it. im blaming it on typo's ya maybe that will work

Would you expect the NSA to NOT lisen in to suspected terrorists phone conversations?
since they CAN lisen in to millions of conversations through computers
how could you expect THEM to NOT do it?
What can be done, will be done.
it is our thinking that needs adjusting. The "carnivore" type programming that enables computers to passively lisen to voice conversations and alert at specific words like "bomb" or some such is not going to stop exsisting.
if it is here in the real world and we can use it It will get used.
It is nieve to expect otherwise.
there isnt anything anyone can do about it.
sorry, get used to the idea.
The whole wire tap story is just another domestic press attempt to undermine our Nations President,..........During a time of WAR.......

The Arrogance to believe that we are no onger under threat of danger,
that somehow those mud people could not ever actually hurt us, is the great weakness of the liberal movement.
What is so amazing is that every story every movie is allways the same
we did something messed up and have ruined, the enviroment, the earth the political relationship..........the (insert what you feel guilty about here)...
The Muslims Hate us
That is not our FAULT
the muslims will kill us with Happy abandon
That is not our FAULT
The muslims are a backwards primitive tribal people that have been placed in a position of control of the majority of the worlds energy resources...
That is not our FAULT
We are NOT GUILTY of anything
The constant avalanch of guilt we heap on ourselves is wrong.
We spend almost three times as much money on other countrys as Everyone else in the world COMBINED.
and they want to be mad at us?
See,
No one has been able to come up with a credible reason for the ARABS to hate us.
That is because there isnt any.
it is a old fashion "Buffalo"
if these grubby little people can frighten enough soccer moms they can get their way.
I say f eck them!
We (that is All of us) need to stop this silly infighting put aside the fake phoney moralistic values and Win the WAR!
the longer we draw it out the longer it will be.
To put it simply
We must incinerate them ALL!!!!!!
How does 600,000 muslims world wide sound?

Whoa! There are about 1.2 BILLION Muslims in the world right now. Some of them are women and children. Some are men of peace. I don't think that you have to have the sensibilities of a soccer mom to see that incineration all of them would be by far the worst case of genocide that the world has ever known.

Show me where the bad guys live, and I will lead the charge personally, but this world is way too complicated for simplistic solutions.

I must say, Dennis that I am appalled and offended. And embarrased....

Moderators, don't remove this. Allow people of good will to respond to him

I've given some thought to this post and wondered about the best way to respond.
We are unique as a nation in that our heritage is not about the land we occupy. Unlike Russia or Germany or France and many others, we never really held to the idea of "fatherland".
Our Nation from birth was a collection of ideals. Of truths that out forebears saw as self-evident.
And it was never meant to be "fatherland above all else" like we see in many other places where tyrants and occupiers and greater evils come and go over the centuries but duty to the "fatherland" is steadfast.
Our "fatherland" is written on aging parchment in Washington. You could transplant us to any piece of ground on earth with those documents, and that is where America would be.
Ours is a nation that strives to be good and right because our foundation compells us to. Often we fail despite the striving but we sometimes get a little closer to it. To quote the poet, "We mean to be what we meant to be"

As for me personally, as long as we as a nation are compelled by the foundation laid out in those precious documents, and as long as we "mean to be what we meant to be" I will stand true, through tough times and stupid leaders.
But if those truths and ideals - those documents -that are our "fatherland" are cast aside or rent asunder, then I am cast aside and rent asunder with them.
I prefer "Give me Liberty or give me Death" to "America, love it or leave it"

I prefer the same outriderdark - we weren't supposed to become the land of ignorant rednecks he l l bent on changing the world to our standards. Spreading this so called democracy - the USA is NOT A DEMOCRACY - what is it gonna take to get that through peoples heads - Democracy is two wolves and a sheep sitting down to vote on what to have for lunch. The USA is supposed to be a REPUBLIC - there is a difference, but you couldn't tell that from what you read and hear.

I agree. And I was very uncomfortable when the administration started using that sort of jingoist language after 9/11. Why not National Security instead of "Homeland" Security? And why the "Patriot" act? Could it have been a very deliberate ploy to paint anyone who disagreed with it as un-patriotic?

By the way, whatever happened to the color-coded security alerts we were constantly bombarded with in the run-up to the last elections??

Yes, Stopper. And to make it clearer for people who don't know what you mean
We are not a direct democracy (which begs the question of why we keep trying to make everyone else one).
We are a republic or a representative democracy . Representative democracies keep a majority from opressing the minority, for lack of a better way to put it.
Direct democracies are a MESS as is evident in all the direct democracies we keep propping up.

Troy, the language being used in the last four years is very frightening. It seems obvious that language is being chosen very carefully.

I would like to see a lot more of the "good muslims" fighting the grubby vermin that are trying to ruin this beautiful country. If they are truely good muslims, they should be not just speaking against radicalism, but doing what they can in forcefully ablolishing their terrible and sadistic ways of life that are trying to take down this country and its people.
