Can a bullet cause a fire?

Mythbusters will be testing this one next Wed. night -- They have been doing a lot of firearm myths lately I am sure many of you saw the ones they did firing a 50bmg into a pool at 30 degrees -the bullet self destructed in 18" of water

Mythbusters can be full of $#!+. All of the factors are not figured in sometimes, and as a result some of their testing is full of ****! Remember they are educated without a lot of experience, and especially when it comes to firearms. At times they fudge on their calculations so that they get their predetemined result (for instance we can't check the angles they use, we only know what they say, and it could be incorrect, by a long ways that can be hidden by camera angle, etc!). They can alter the velocities, and they don't have to use whatever they claim they are using, TV cameras can hide a lot!

They are like any other TV program, when they do the bidding of their advertisers, they get more income from advertising. Believe me they will not be on TV very long if they do not arrive at the predetermined result!

an incendary round can, heck I bet a tracer round on a dry bhrome field could do the same.

I've seen small grass fires as the result of tracer rounds.

Side interest: I saw a movie or program the other night where the rear window of a vehicle was hit with rounds (at night) and Hollywood seems to think metal (be it lead or copper) against glass couses sparks. Gimme a break, lol.

A more realistic Hollywood stunt prop would've been the window disintergrating inward.

A guy pled guilty out here a while back to setting the hills on fire by firing at an old motorcycle frame. I don't know what he was shooting.

And if you hit a granite boulder at twilight with a steelcore bullet, it's a real eye-opener; it looks like a fireworks starburst. One shot this spring convinced me to put away the steelcore until the rainy season...

all i can say from experiance is that firing a .308 in the prone possition in dry dead grass about a few inches tall can and will start a blaze!:right: but the muzzle flash is what did it...not the bullet

Amen brother. I remember an episode where they said that rubbing sticks together (like a rod and bow) can't start a fire. Every cubscout in America knows thats !!!!!!!!.

My club won't allow a .50 round on the iron targets because of "molten metal fragments". Go figure.....

thing was that they tested it with a precussion muzzle loader and they got the fire going.

With a black powder gun, there's no doubt. I've read many references to smouldering clothing when people were shot up close back when.

Did anyone see the one where they tried to prove\disprove the myth that a woman hit with a minie ball that had passed through a soldiers scrotum became pregnant? I thought it was ridiculous from the start but the shooting was excellent!
