You're right; hats off to Google for standing up and fighting. I'm pretty disgusted with Microsoft and Yahoo.

On the other hand, in China Google meekly blocks anything the government asks them to.

China's a bit different though and I don't really think that you can talk about them the same as the rest of the world. There's just different rules where China is concerned.

As earlier mentioned, the main thing that bothers me about this is my feeling that the Bush Administration is trying to stake out territory and establish that they have the right to barge into any kind of high-tech communications or record keeping at will.

But they're also being lazy. Face it: they have the capability to do their own research and do it legally, in ways that don't intrude on the rights or privacy of others. Instead, they're trying to commandeer the private sector to do their work for them, at the internet companys' own expense. That's kind of adding insult to injury.

Thumbs down

First they self-rightiously spout the lines of child-porn,save the children, now I see in the paper that it was all about preventing the kiddies from gaining access to the porn.
Now which is it?
The whole thing reminds me of the lines of crap we were supposed to sniff at W**o,justify what ever you want to do by screaming protection of the children, then kill 'em all for their own protection, been hearing that line for the lastforty years, starting with VN.
This is nothing new, this is not just Bush, this is gummint doing what gummint does, both sides of the aisle, and it always seems to work!

I like my porn clean and legal. Bush can do what ever he can to ferret out the perves with the child porn, animal acts, E-Mail trash, and the people trying to sell me growth cream. I would let Bush take us to the brink of Fascism if he could destroy the malcontents of this country.

Nor any dissent, for that matter. And the reason I'm a "malcontent" is that they're already trying to take us to the brink of Fascism--and beyond.

Excerpts from a Newsweek article

--Originally, the government asked for a treasure trove of all searches made in June and July 2005; the request has been scaled back to one week's worth of search queries.

--DOJ spokesperson Charles Miller says that the government is requesting only the actual search terms, and not anything that would link the queries to those who made them.

--Though the government intends to use these data specifically for its COPA-related test, it's possible that the information could lead to further investigations and, perhaps, subpoenas to find out who was doing the searching.

--What if certain search terms indicated that people were contemplating terrorist actions or other criminal activities? Says the DOJ's Miller, "I'm assuming that if something raised alarms, we would hand it over to the proper [authorities]."

In other words, they're on a fishing expedition. What are the chances of them rummaging thru all that data without finding something that "raises alarms?"

Ruf? comments? waiting, waiting..............
you know bush is just a liar. His interest has nothing to do with children who are abused and taken advantage of. personally, though some things I find disgusting, others do not. For example, partial birth abortions. I think it's murder and nothing less. The dems think it's a woman's right! though it's not the same thing, something as extreme as that serves to illustrate my point. given the chance, the government would love to rule us completely! It appears they, bush in particular, wants to take away all our rights for privacy in the name of them bad ole terrorists, truth is, he's a liar. Chaney was even whoreing himself yesterday on the news. he was saying that because of bush stealing our 4th amendment rights away, the terrorists have not attacked us! What bull! i got this talisman, i shake it at the moon! Guess what....because I do that every third full moon, planet X has not crashed into the earth! That makes just about as much sense as cheney's comments/lies.

Question

Our borders are still wide open, maybe that's why there have been no attacks,I'm thinking we are way past due,no dam telling what has come into the country and our enemies may be setting us up for some simultanious attacks to look more powerful to the rest of the world.
Who knows,but it's possible!
And to think,we could have done something about it were it not for the demand for cheap labor by some greedy bastids!

The FBI already monitors people who watch child porn. If Bush says that is what why he wants to monitor, than it is a lie because the Government has been doin that for a long time. :lucky:
