Do you watch....

.........the Ultimate Fighting Championships?? Kinda off topic for this forum but just curious to see if anyone else is addicted to it like me.

Some say its too brutal but once you watch it, you realize its not any worse than boxing.

I could never understand why anyone would really want to sit and watch two people pulverize themselves.

Maybe it's our age of violence that makes it tantilating for some but not for me. To me it's as near barbaric as when the Romans who watched it 2000 years ago.

I've seen enough blood and guts over the years and I think some continue to support unnecessary violence.

iflylow74...I've watched the Ultimate Fighting Championships and flinch with every blow. However, for the past two months, at 11 p.m. CST on Dish TV Ch 143, I watch Classic Fights (Boxing). They're re-showing boxing matches from the mid 30's up to the present. Many of them I was only able to listen to before I had access to TV in the mid 50's.
So now, getting to see them for the first time is enjoyable. They've shown fights of Max Baer, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Sonny Liston, Cassius Clay/Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Frazier, and many more.
As far as being brutal...yes, that's the nature of fights.:jaw:

Ox...for me the "old" sport of boxing is much different than the modern fights were there is every attempt to end a person's life with one blow.

The sport of boxing has, or did have, sportsman's rules that the refs and corners would look out for a struggling boxer unlike this ultimate crap.

I had never seen the ultimate fighting until a few nights ago on my nephew's TV. It seemed pretty straightforward to me; looser rules than traditional boxing, but they were quick to stop it if a guy quit or got hurt.

I wrestled three years in high school and one at King's Point (Merchant Marine Academy), and was varsity each year, but not championship material.

Maybe I'm barbaric, but a good boxing or wrestling match is a thing of beauty, like any other contest of skill.

I used to have a kickboxing Thai brother-in-law, who routinely kicked leaves off low-hanging tree branches above his head as we walked down the street. One of my favorite people, but we were both young and short-fused, and squared off in a hallway one day. Fortunately he had better sense than to tackle me in close quarters where I could get my hands on him, and I certainly wasn't crazy enough to accept his invitation into the back yard where he'd have kicked my head off.

Eventually we cooled off and had a couple of beers instead.

Thumbs up

Troy2000...wisdom to know when to fight is a good thing. I enjoyed your story about your BIL and you.

The "Ultimate Fighters" seem to know the rules of their sport well, and do just about anything to win their matches. But...I have watched so many boxing matches in the past that I still favor that type of fight.

In fact, when I was In H.S. our coach would make us put on the boxing gloves, while the entire class watched, to settle any disagreements which got out of hand. Soon as that was over we forgot about the argument and usually got along just fine after that.

But a year's difference in age is pretty big when you're young, and I got a lot better at covering up than attacking. That may have influenced my later liking of wrestling, where I could grab hold and enthusiastically go to work on someone, instead of standing around warding off blows.

You guys that dont like the idea of it should check it out. The ref's are excellent at protecting the fighters. Boxing is actually more dangerous than UFC. When a boxer gets knocked down, he gets a 10 count to gather himself and go at it again. In the UFC, if you get knocked down, 9 times outta 10, the fight will be over. I've never seen a older UFC fighter who is so puch drunk he can hardly speak. There are plenty of old boxers in that condition (Sugar Rey Leonard).

my daughters and i watch it all the time. i have been in martial arts since i was 12 and continued it while i was in the army, and both of my daughters are preparing to get their black belts.they have about a year and a half till their ready.they have been studying for going on 6 or 7 years now i think. the UFC is a great tool in their martial arts education. we discuss every match when its over and i let them tell me how the fight could have been shorter and what mistakes were made. it has helped them alot! im not able to teach them ground fighting or any leg movements now due to an injury i had.and the useing the ufc as a visual aide has allowed me to continue their studies more at home than i would have been able to do without it.

Rich "Ace" Franklin is my favorite fighter too!!! I also like Randy Courture but am afraid he may be past his prime. I figure Chuck Liddell will beat him again this Saturday.

Franklin is going to fight Hughes?? I didnt know that. Do you know if Franklin is going to cut weight to get to 170lb class or is Hughes going up to 185?

I agree whirlwind. Neither my son or I are in martial arts any longer, but I try to use UFC as examples for him in case he has to defend himself.

What type of martial art do you practice? We used to do Tae Kwon Do but lost interest. Seems like more art than martial!!! I've been reading about a martial art developed by the Israelies called Krav Magda. From what I can tell, it is a no nonsense, to the point style used to quickly train their soldiers and civilians to defend themselves.

That's what Im looking for for my son. Something he can put into practice without having to study it for 10 years.

If its good enough for the Israely Defense Force, it has to be good!!
