Not to say I'm going stir-crazy...

...but how many crossword puzzles does a guy have to do before he's completed penance for all his sins past and future, in this plus any other life?

I've also watched cartoons, read books, napped, checked gunandgame 43 times a day, etc. Four days down, five and a half weeks to go...

I pulled my dressings off and counted the staples today; oog. Nine on one side, and 12 on the other. No wonder it feels like that. And I finally got to take a shower.

Then I put on clean pajamas and robe, and made it to the kitchen. My wife looked at me and said, "what are you doing all the way in here? You don't look too good."

I told her, "what are you talking about about? I look great! And I smell pretty, too. Matter of fact, I FEEL great. Want me to do a little song and dance number for you? 'I'm a little teapot, short and stout; This is my handle, and this...'"

At which point she threatened me with bodily harm if I showed anyone my spout in her kitchen, and helped me back into my room.

No one appreciates the arts any more. But I'm ready for a nap, anyway.

i dont know if that is a sence of humour, or a sence of desperation. none the less that is funny. spent some time off work myself due to a stay in the hospital, not good times. get well soon.

Got my staples out today

The surgeon told me "I think you are a very brave man" for having had both hernias repaired together, instead of doing one side at a time. And it sounded even funnier in his accent...I dunno where he's from, but his name is Junnarkar.

I told him bravery had nothing to do with it; I just had no idea what I was letting myself in for.

One-month update

How bored am I getting? for those of you who play computer games, here's a clue: I've been playing "Clive Barker's Undying", with the difficulty set on "Nightmare", and trying not to use any healthpacks. So far I've found and stashed 28 healthpacks, and I have 85 of my original 100 health points left. Of course, that means I hit the save button every time I get through any kind of encounter in one piece, and sometimes reload and try again a dozen times before I make it.

I've been cooking dinner every evening, and washing the dishes by hand every morning, for crying out loud.

I finished refinishing my Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant's stock; anyone who likes pics should check it out on the Mosin Nagant forum.

I started getting out and roaming around a little last week, stepped off a curb downtown with my head turned, and did something to the right-side repair. I'm still paying for it; I went back on the Vicodin and ibuprofin until today.

But all in all, I'm healing up. I was hoping to be back at work in six weeks, but I'll have to wait and see what the doc says next week, and how I feel.

Update on the update. I gave up trying to use no healthpacks at all in "Undying", so I've used a couple but now have 46.

I also gave up and took another Vicodin.

On my way to bed, 7mm. I'll look at your contest tomorrow, but it isn't my strong point.

Don't worry about the Vicodin. I started out with one 500mm pill every four hours after the operation, worked my way down to one every six or eight hours, and I'd been off them for days before I jarred myself stepping off that curb last week. Since then, I've been taking one in the evening after moving around all day, and sometimes one in the morning if I'm riding to town and walking around a store or something.

A bigger problem is that I've put on weight lying around, and my pants are too tight to fasten over the incisions. so I'm stuck in flannel pajamas or my company overalls for a while, unless I buy new pants. don't want to do that, because I'll lose the pounds when I start getting more active. Maybe I'll pick up a set of sweats.

Went back to the doctor for a progress report

He says another six or seven weeks before he'll release me for work.

By then I'll be totally stir-crazy. I'll be outside in the yard with my dogs, baying at the moon, howling with the ambulances and barking at people as they go by.

He told me that when he does both sides at once like he did with me, the body favors the side that was worse, and the other side gets beat up and heals slower. So recovery time is significantly longer than it would be for a single repair, but still shorter than doing one, letting it heal and doing the other.

Get-well gifts from the family

A wine-bottle holder from the wife. Say what you will about California, it's nice to live where I can go to a restaurant-supply house, and pay $1.99 for a bottle of wine that's better than New Yorkers can get for ten or fifteen bucks:

And a Hibatchi-style Sportsman's Grill by Lodge. These things are $107.95 in Lodge's catalogue, and they range from $69.00 to $90.00 on the internet. My older son works part-time at a Walmart, where two of them sat on the shelf for months without selling. They finally dropped them to five bucks to clear inventory, and he grabbed one for me.

It works much better than you'd think; I cooked steaks for the family on it last night. The little trap door is for adding coals, and the sliding draft door below it does a good job of regulating the heat. The grille flips over, so it'll set closer to the coals.

I'm good-looking, too: see my new avatar (only a forty-year-old pic).

But I can't dance worth a dang.
