Cool Canadian Border Guards run from Guns !

Headline from the Anchorage Daily News .2/20/06
Blaine, Washington.- A 100mph chase ended in a blaze of gunfire at the Peace Arch Monument that straddles the U.S.-Canada Border. As 2 murder suspects from California Blew Past the U.S. Customs Station and Raced North to the Border, a Deputy Sheriff managed to ram their vehicle and spin it down an Embankment and across a Broad lawn between the two border stations before it came to a stop, the suspects fled on foot and in the ensuing gun battle, one was wounded and they were both Captured. The Reaction on the Canadian side unfolded along a Standard-if Contentious script: The Canadian border guards WALKED OFF THEIR POSTS ! Roughly a Dozen times in the last four months, Canadian Border guards, who unlike their U.S. counterparts are unarmed, have left their posts in response to reports of dangerous suspects heading north."Primarily this is an image thing. We're a peaceful nation with Canadians being proud of the fact that we don't greet people at the border crossings with someone who's Armed," said Ron Moran, the Guards Union president." But the reality is that we don't live in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood anymore" added Moran. Moran said members of his union were responding appropriately to the risk by walking off their posts until the danger is passed.

Hey Moose, a few years ago some California state assemblyman from the San Diego area introduced a bill to make the manufacture or possession of spud guns a felony, punishable by up to fifteen years in the state pen.

Fortunately, there was enough publicity to get him laughed down. He claimed he was carrying the bill on behalf of law enforcement agencies who had contacted him, but couldn't name anyone when he was pushed for details.

I love potato guns; coyotes fear me when I'm carrying. I've never hit one, but I've had 'em running in circles...they don't seem to associate the sound with the potato going "splat!" beside them (at first anyway), and since I'm usually lobbing them in from a pretty good distance like a mortar, they have trouble figuring out which direction the rounds are coming from.
