No respect for the Guard...

There's this place I frequent, called the Mousepad, It's a place where gamers can go and hang out, play on computers or various consoles, ot just sit around talking, reading, ow whatever. Think I've become their unofficial mascot since everywhere I go around town people are asking me "Is the Mousepad open today?" "When does the Mousepad open?" "How's Gary[the owner]?" "Have you seen John[Gary's brother]?"

Anyway, there's this kid who frequents it, too. I never bothered to learn his name, I just know him as what he is; A seventeen year old child.

He's been heckling me alot recently, aparently because of the fact I'm in the National Guard. Like what transpired last night; I was watching John play stronghold and talking about it, because I was curious about the game. John got up to walk behind the counter and asked, "So when you shipping out?"

I told him "Hopefully this month."

"What, they bump your shipdate back?"

"Yeah, I failed the run last drill."

Now, it was at this point that child butted in with "You failed getting into the Army?"

...

What fine ears this boy has, eh?

"No, I failed the eight minute mile I'm supposed to run."

"How can you not run a mile in eight minutes with your build?"

"Say that next time you get an infected ingrown toenail, and stub it-"

"I won't do that because I take care of my feet! It's so easy to be in the Army!"

"I don't see you enlisting."

"That's because I'm not stupid!"

He quicky degraded into petty insults; "You're just one of many!" "you don't matter!" "I don't even think you'd be worth looking up in a few years to see how much of a failure you've become!" "I'm gonna be a Psycologist and make peoples' lives better, You're going to come home in a bodybag!" "You're going to leave boot camp crying and come home to your mommy!" "YOu dropped out of Highschool to join the army, you idiot." "You should go to college and make something of yourself, you drop-out." "I know an E-9! He told me all about guys like you!" "You're gonna be a !!!!!! someone's !!!!-buddy!"

Eventually I got pretty tired of his !!!!, and started shooting back with my own insults, none were particularly clever or noteworthy, basically, things like "You think you're any better?", "What do you know of the military?", and "You don't even know anything about me." The latter he replied with "I don't need to know anything about you!"

This kid's gonna make a great psycologist, isn't he.

He got really agitated and at last said "You walk home everynight! I have a car! Don't think I won't wait for you outside! I know where you live!"

I just told him "Go ahead and wait for me then, boy. Give me Legal justification to kick your !!! and press charges for assault. Try getting into a decent college with that stuck to you."

He left, And when I left several hours later, his ten year old, rusted out Ford was gone."

Just another child trying to act like a man.

Sadly, I may actually have to mess him up if he keep this up.

Too many kids that age have no respect or upbringing, I see it all the time. Don't let it get you down Gunnie Ed!

It's just like everthing else in life if you grow hearing bad things about people or groups and you tend to blurt them out yourself until you either learn better or get your butt kicked once or twice. Most of the regulars on this board have been or currently are in the service. We know what we gained from the expereice and in some cases what we might have lost.

Forget about the kid, he's just mouthing off. He is either parroting what he's heard around or perhaps down deep he's jealous and wishes he had the balls to join up himself. If I were you I'd get hold of a recruiting pamphlet or two (I would get one macho one Rangers/Special Forces/Paratroopers and the other a technical one, were brains are required) and stick 'em in my pocket, the next time he rags on you give him the pamphlets and tell him to learn a little and to then either put up or shut up.

I have no problem with somebody cussing about the service if they were in it. They've earned the right. And that includes spouses. Other wise keep your opinion to yourself.

I can relate. I am a young guy who used to be making those remarks, but I have since learned the importance of respecting one's descions. I am a guard as well, coast guard. I am also married at a young age, 23. My friends know to respect my descions, whether they are good choices or not so good. Some people I know tell me my life is over beacuse I have married so young and that I have conformed to the man and uncapable of my own independant thoughts. Well, one look at her and you'll know why I tied the knot. Second, I have been teased many times about my choice to join the CG. Some people applaud my descion while other mock.

I am going to tell you a little story. When I was walking down a pier in a little ways off San Diego, I was approached by a drunk college jerk. He had a shirt that had college printed on the front. Anyways, he told me that I am just a shark watcher and that I need to keep my eyes open for the ships of cheap Chinese crap awaiting to reach our shores. I should have been the better man a not let it get to me. He began ranting how unimportant I am, so I said what is your point. I begin to roll up my sleeves revealing all my tats, there are a lot. He gets ready. Before we do this he asks if I am going to show him what they teach me in the guard. I respond I am going to show you what 5 years in the do jang looks like. I am a black-belt in Tae Kwon Do and I have beaten other skilled fighters who are trained to fight, so I know what I am doing. I let him sleep there like the baby he was, and two cops come running up. They ask me what happened and I said he got a little worked up and he is taking a nap. Moral of the story, respect one's descions no matter what you think of them or they may knock your !!! out.

the cool think is, I have a whole box of them. and t-shirts, and my own buisiness cards. See, the Guard has this thing going called th eGuard Recruiting assistance program, or G-RAP. National Guardsmen sighn up, get $50 just for taking a test, and then we get a box of recruiting swag.

I could probably just put a few pamphlets on the counter...if i get Gary's permission, of course, it's basically his house.

Thumbs up

GunnyEd, the Military builds men. The National Guard helps people in need.

Liberal Psychologists make a lot of neurotics.

I respect your decision far more than his.

spoiled rotten little pissant

You should catch up with him when he is out with his friends and scare him into pissing into his pants.

I knew a kid who was bratty like that once (but not that much of an !!!); young superior and didn't care about anyone but himself. Last I talked with him he passed Naval Boot camp and was in Nuke tech school. I told him how proud of him I was.

when i was a kid i knew it all too. talked the talk and walked the walk. got my arse kicked for it as well by a couple guys one or two too many years older than me for it. that one whupping taught me more than a thousand timeouts could have. hand scooter a whupping, he's got it coming and some 15 or twenty years down the road he'll realise he deserved it. might even straighten him out some.

SKS,

At least you're TALL enough to join the Hooligan Navy. You got to be at least 6 feet for the depth of the water.

Seriously, was Deep Water Navy, had a Hooligan on my boat, kidded him, too.

Motto of the CG, I heard, was "You GOT to go out. You don't GOT to come back."

Kinda like the movie, "The Perfect Storm." CG dying to save an a**hole.

Gunnie, (Hate the name, known a few gunnies in my time.)

Does this kid even KNOW what an E-9 is?

He's 17, you're past 18, watch out, you could be the one with a record, with or without witnesses and provocation.

Cheers,

George

I'd pay him about as much attention as a barking dog

You don't take it personally when a dog barks. You keep one eye open to make sure he doesn't run up unexpectedly and try to bite , and otherwise ignore him.

It is always a good descion to be the better man turn the other cheek. You might do something you regret later that might hurt your chances of moving up the lader. I should have thought about the same thing, but in my rage I didn't. I am lucky I was not arrested, and I am not going to take that chance again.
